British Triathlon and GO TRI teamed up with Angellica Bell and Sport England to help get the nation active through the swim, bike and run fitness challenge, Tri January.

Nearly 3,000 individuals signed up to take part in Tri January 2020 as a way of kickstarting the decade by getting active. Participants in the campaign were given a bingo card of health and fitness challenges to complete in January, including to get active during a lunchbreak and eat five-a-day.

Delivered alongside Sport England’s ‘This Girl Can’ campaign to help more women to take part in sport and physical activity; just under 65% of Tri January participants were female. The campaign also engaged a variety of ages, with participants ranging from 7 to 78 years.

A separate bingo card for children and young people was produced to help engage them and their families, including an additional 2,500 children at 27 schools across the country who took on the challenge together.

One of the schools which took on Tri January was Copthill School, Stamford where each class was set the challenge of filling in a card, with five children needing to have completed each challenge before the class could tick it off. The school are now hoping to organise a duathlon to continue to engage children in multisport activity.

Participants were set the challenge of signing up to a GO TRI Event or Active Session to help provide the motivation to continue exercising beyond January.

British Triathlon and GO TRI have also worked with local event organisers to provide a series of discounts to events throughout 2020 as part of a training guide that will support participants to continue to an active lifestyle.

GO TRI is British Triathlon’s entry-level programme and is tailored to introducing new people into the sport with accessible and affordable events, as well  as GO TRI Active Sessions and the GO TRI Gym Challenge. Following Tri January, the GO TRI Community consists of over 36,500 people being helped to get active through swim, bike and run activities with GO TRI.

Jenny Vincent, Head of Participation at British Triathlon, said: “After the success of Tri January last year we were really excited to see what 2020 would bring.

“Our aim as an organisation is to deliver great experiences through swim, bike and run and, with the support of Angellica and This Girl Can, we’ve been able to reach new audiences through Tri January, giving more people the opportunity to be introduced and engaged in the sport.

“With January now over, we’re really looking forward to hearing how participants continue to take their next steps with the training guide and events and activities across the country.”
