Paratriathlon Championships close the curtain on Mallory Park

Rounding off a fantastic day of racing at Mallory Park, Britain’s top paratriathletes showcased their talents, each bidding for a British title.

Joe Townsend returned to action in the PTWC classification, not only winning, but booking himself a spot on Team England for the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in the process after battling with Bret Crossley, Phil Hogg and Mark Conway.

Joe said, “I was in two minds whether to race today or not. I’ve been ill for the last couple of months since returning from America but this was a selection race and in the back of my mind, I wanted to qualify for the Commonwealth Games – and I have!

“It’s fantastic. I stuck to my race plan on the bike and got to where I needed to be and once I was ahead, I relaxed a bit and brought it home.”

Lizzie Tench managed the same qualification feat, following her win in the women’s PTWC classification and will join Joe on the Gold Coast next year.

Elsewhere, George Peasgood (Men’s PTS5) had a solid race, winning his classification. Claire Cashmore also topped the Women’s PTS5, the former international swimmer finishing five minutes ahead of Kerry Large.

Claire said, “It was pretty hard. My swim went well, my bike was ok but it was quite a technical course which is still quite new to me.

"I'm still learning but it's going well and this year has been very much about going out there and enjoying myself and not putting too much pressure on myself. I'm really  having fun at the minute and that's great."

Rio 2016 Paralympic gold medallist, Andy Lewis again delivered the goods, topping the PTS2 category and adding another medal to his collection.

Andy said, "I was a bit worried about the swim as I've not been very good lately and obviously having an accident I havn't been able to train properly for 8 weeks.

"Out on the bike it was very technical but what a day for it! Just beautiful. I got round the course as I wanted to - no injuries, no falls.

"Brilliant event - well organised as always and nice to have our coaches here aswell to give us some guidance ahead of the world championships next week."

Haseeb Ahmad, guided by Jack Peasgood was the first of the PTVI athletes over the line, a great feat for the visually imapaired Ironman World Record holder.
