Rio Paralympic Triathlon inspires participation

Throughout October British Triathlon organised eight GO TRI Novice Training Days specifically for people with a disability across the country.

On the weekend of 10-11 September, ParalympicsGB athletes took home 4 medals as Paratriathlon made its debut in the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games. Andy Lewis took gold in the Mens PT2 category, Lauren Steadman took the Women’s PT4 category silver and Alison Patrick and Melissa Reid took the silver and bronze in the PT5 category with the help respectively of their guides Hazel Smith and Nicole Walters. These performances, alongside the rest of the record breaking team have inspired the British public to try their hand at the sport.

Throughout October British Triathlon held eight GO TRI Novice Training Days, specifically for people with a disability, across the country. With no experience needed this provided a platform for individuals to access specialist British Triathlon coaches at an accessible venue with equipment available to borrow on the day. In attendance across the country were individuals with a range of conditions, including sensory impairments, cerebral palsy, MS and autism.

Attendees from the session gave hugely positive responses post sessions, with individuals commenting on what a fantastic opportunity the sessions provided, particularly enjoying the chance it gave them to connect with like-minded people in a sporting setting. Participants also indicated that they would like to progress to entering a GO TRI or another triathlon event.

The sessions were also supported by regional coaches, allowing them the opportunity to gain additional experience and develop their own skills in coaching athletes with a disability.
