Rio Paralympic medal hopefuls will race for the last time on UK soil at Tri Liverpool on Sunday, August 14 before flying to Brazil to compete in the inaugural paratriathlon at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

Athletes confirmed to race at Tri Liverpool include former swimmer Lauren Steadman (PT4) who took part in the Paralympics in 2008 and 2012, 2004 Paralympian David Hill (PT4) and 2016 European bronze medalist Joe Townsend (PT1).

Both elite and amateur paratriathletes will come together for the first race of the day at 7am on Sunday, August 14, 2016. Taking on the sprint distance, competitors will swim 750m, cycle 20km using hand cycles, bikes or tandem bikes with a guide, followed by a 5km wheelchair or running race.

Jonathon Riall, British Paratriathlon Head Coach, says: “With only a month to go until Rio, this race will allow athletes to make their final preparations ahead of the Games. Our leading British paratriathletes are racing at Tri Liverpool and will be looking forward to a great send off before we travel to Brazil.”

In addition, a world-class field is expected to race in the elite men’s and women’s races. Confirmed names include triathlete twins Tom and David Bishop, last year’s Tri Liverpool winners Morgan Davies and Sophie Coldwell, plus Adam Bowden who has participated in six of seven ITU World Triathlon Series races this year so far.

Many famous faces will join the 1,900 elite and mass participation athletes on the course including BBC TV presenter Louise Minchin, reality star and first Big Brother winner Craig Philips, and Hollyoaks actors Karl Collins (Louis Loveday) and Jared Garfield (Nathan Nightingale).

CEO of British Triathlon, Jack Buckner, says; “Tri Liverpool is a truly inspirational event to watch, with athletes of all abilities - elite and amateur coming together on the same iconic course. Spectators can catch a glimpse of future Paralympic stars, and we expect to see an influx of triathlon enthusiasts take up the sport for the first time this summer through our #YourGOTRI campaign.”

Further British Championship races taking place at Tri Liverpool include the British Elite Sprint DistanceTriathlon Championships and the British Age-Group Standard Distance Championships. Tri Liverpool will also host a sprint distance race, sprint relay and GO TRI+ beginner event on the day.
