The ITU Cross Triathlon World Championships concluded the 2016 season in Australia with Great Britain Age-Group athletes claiming two medals at Lake Crackenback, Snowy Mountains
An exceptionally busy year of championship racing drew to a close this past weekend at the ITU Cross Triathlon World Championships in Australia. Snowy Mountains hosted the off-road triathlon format, with both reigning champions returning to defend their titles in style. Ruben Ruzafa (ESP) won the title for the third consecutive year, taking the lead on the bike and then holding strong during the run.
Bermuda’s Flora Duffy concluded a brilliant year. Her win in Australia means that she now ends 2016 as ITU World Champion, XTERRA World Champion and ITU Cross Triathlon World Champion. Having finished fifth, sixth and fourth in the last three editions of this championship, Great Britain’s sole Elite entrant, Jacqui Slack, was aiming to finally secure a podium spot, but she would finish the day in seventh position.
A 25-strong team of British Age-Group athletes made the long journey ‘Down Under’, with two athletes making the podium to return home with medals. Molly Campbell (F18-19) added a Gold medal to the Silver she won last year in Sardinia, with William Hammerton (M70-74) finishing second in his division to add Silver to the Bronze medal he won earlier this year at the ETU Triathlon European Championships in Lisbon.
