Kate Waugh kicked off the relay superbly, having only completed her individual event the previous evening, She covered a 250m swim, 5km bike and 1.6km run before handing over to individual bronze medallist, Ben Dijkstra, then Olivia Mathias and finally, Calum Johnson.
In an exciting battle between the world’s leading triathlon nations, it was Spain’s David Castro that broke free from the rest on the final leg to win gold. Calum Johnson was just behind him to win a brilliant silver for the Great Britain team.
He said: “It’s the first time I’ve been part of a relay team and, I think, first at a world champs for the rest of the team too. We came in really hoping for a medal. It’s really good to get second, a win would have been lovely but second is really good, so I’m really prod of the whole team.”
