Swim, bike, run will take centre stage in Swansea this weekend with the Welsh city hosting both the Volvo 2022 World Triathlon Para Series Swansea and IRONMAN 70.3 Swansea.
Along with the action in Swansea, there is also IRONMAN events with British interest in both the USA and Poland, as well as in Europe Triathlon Junior Cup Chisinau and a chance to be crowned Scottish national champion over the sprint distance.
Volvo 2022 World Triathlon Para Series Swansea (6 August)
Britain’s first ever standalone World Triathlon Para Series event is being held in Swansea on Saturday (6 August) as the world’s best paratriathletes race at Volvo 2022 World Triathlon Para Series Swansea.
Paralympic, World, Commonwealth and continental champions will all be racing in the Welsh city, with 25 different nations expected to be represented on the start list.
There’s a strong British contingent competing at their home race with 12 British athletes on the start list including newly crowned Commonwealth champions Dave Ellis and his guide Luke Pollard, and Katie Crowhurst, who will be guided by Grace Hawthorne in Swansea.
The event is free for spectators and no tickets are required so anyone can come down to Swansea’s SA1 waterfront to watch the racing in-person. The World Triathlon Para Series races will also be available to watch live on British Triathlon’s YouTube channel or https://www.triathlonlive.tv/, starting at 13:00 (UK Time).
Europe Triathlon Junior Cup Chisinau (7 August)
Callum Stedman will make his international debut for Great Britain at Europe Triathlon Junior Cup Chisinau.
The event in Moldova is over the super sprint distance with athletes racing over a 400m lake swim, a 10.2km bike course and a 2.8km run to the finish.
Stedman recently had success in the British Triathlon Youth & Junior Super Series, finishing third at the end of the Lochore Meadows Aquathlon and is currently ranked in the top-15 in the Junior Super Series rankings.
IRONMAN 70.3 Swansea (7 August)
IRONMAN 70.3 heads to Wales for the first time this weekend and, with a home race opportunity, it’s no surprise to see a stacked start list featuring international athletes and over 25 British pro triathletes.
Double Olympic champion Alistair Brownlee headlines the men’s start list which includes 15 pro men from Great Britain with the women’s start list also dominated by British athletes with Kat Matthews one of the leading home hopes having finished second at this year’s IRONMAN World Championships in May and also making history as the first woman to complete the Ironman distance in under eight hours.
The event will start with a 1.2-mile sea swim at the Prince of Wales Dock, before athletes then undertake a 56-mile bike along the waterfront of Swansea Bay, through the Mumbles, across the hills of the Gower before heading back into Swansea city centre.
The 13.1-mile run will be a flat and coastal Swansea Bay course, culminating in the finish on the IRONMAN red carpet at Museum Gardens.
IRONMAN 70.3 Boulder (6 August)
Holly Lawrence is the sole British representative in the women’s pro race at IRONMAN 70.3 Boulder, just a few days after the 32-year-old was confirmed as one of Team Europe’s captain’s picks for the 2022 Collins Cup later this month.
Lawrence has two podium finishes this year at IRONMAN 70.3 distances, finishing third in California in April and Chattanooga a month later.
Starting with a 1.2-mile swim in Boulder Reservoir, athletes will then exit the swim and head onto a rolling 56-mile bike course through the hills of Boulder Country, before a 13.1-mile run around the reservoir and along the Dam Road.
IRONMAN 70.3 Gdynia (7 August)
Rosie Weston is on the start list for IRONMAN 70.3 Gdynia as she continues her pro career having had multiple medal successes representing the Great Britain Age-Group Team including winning European gold last year.
IRONMAN 70.3 Gdynia is centred around the seaport town on the south coast of the Baltic Sea in Poland with the swim in the Gdansk Bay, before the bike through the Kashubia region and then the run on the main streets in Gdynia.
British Triathlon Super Series Swansea (6 August)
The latest event in the British Triathlon Paratri Super Series will take place at Volvo 2022 World Triathlon Para Series Swansea, offering athletes competing a chance to race at the same event as the world’s best.
The Super Series racing will begin at 08:30 (UK Time) and is the final opportunity for paratriathletes competing in this year’s Paratri Super Series to earn points before the British Triathlon Super Series Grand Final later this month (20-21 August).
BRITISH TRIATHLON SUPER SERIES
Scottish National Sprint Distance and Mixed Team Relay Club Championships (6 August)
It will be a day of national champions being crowned at M3 Monikie Triathlon Festival which will host both the Scottish National Youth Triathlon Championships and Scottish National Sprint Distance Triathlon Championships.
Both Championships will take place in and around Monikie Country Park, with an open water swim, a bike course on local roads and a flat run around the Country Park’s ponds.
The sprint distance triathlon is also a qualifying event for athletes wanting to represent the Great Britain Age-Group Team at the 2023 World Sprint Distance Triathlon Championships.
To be eligible to win a Scottish Championship title, athletes must be a member of Triathlon Scotland by 6pm 30th June 2022.
Great Britain Age-Group Team Qualifiers (6 & 7 August)
In addition to the qualifier at M3 Monikie Triathlon Festival, there’s more qualifying opportunities for athletes wanting to qualify for the Great Britain Age-Group Team at Championships in 2023.
St. Neots Duathlon hosts a qualifier for the 2023 European Standard Distance Duathlon Championships on Saturday (6 August, while it’s a qualifying opportunity for the 2023 European Standard Distance Triathlon Championships at London Triathlon on Sunday (7 August).
Athletes must register their intent to qualify for the 2023 Championships by 5pm on the Friday before the qualifying race, as well as the qualifying race itself.
