With temperatures soaring this week, the swim, bike, run action is also heating up with events at world, continental and domestic level making it another busy weekend of racing.
World Triathlon Para Cup A Coruna (19 June)
A week after winning three medals at the first World Triathlon Para Cup event of the year, British paratriathletes will be aiming for more medal success when A Coruna in Spain hosts the next World Triathlon Para Cup on Sunday (19 June).
Dave Ellis and his guide Luke Pollard won gold in Besancon last weekend and they will be back on the men’s PTVI start line in Spain, along with Claire Cashmore, who claimed silver last weekend, in the women’s PTS5.
European silver medallist Michael Salisbury will compete in only his second World Triathlon Para Cup event in the men’s PTS5, while Katie Crowhurst, guided by Grace France, will continue her build-up to the Commonwealth Games in the women’s PTVI.
Europe Triathlon Cup Kitzbuhel (17-18 June)
Olivia Mathias, Dominic Coy, Cameron Harris and Oliver Turner are all heading to Austria for Europe Triathlon Cup Kitzbuhel.
Mathias finished on the podium at both Europe Triathlon Cup events she competed in last year, including victory in Tiszaujvaros, but this will be her first continental cup start in 2022. Coy, Harris and Turner have all raced in Europe Triathlon Cup events already this year.
The super sprint action starts on Friday (17 June) with qualifiers over a 500m swim, 11.2km bike and 3km run. The first 10 male athletes and the first 15 female athletes to cross the line will advance through to the finals on Saturday.
The final will be contested across the eliminator format, consisting of three races of a 250m swim, 5.6km bike and 1.5km run. Athletes will be eliminated after each race with the top-10 after the second race battling it out for the race win and medals.
Europe Triathlon Junior Cup Dusseldorf (19 June)
Junior athletes Jessica Turnbull and Lawrence Martindale will both make their international debuts at Europe Triathlon Junior Cup Dusseldorf on Sunday.
Both Turnbull and Martindale have both been consistent performers in the British Triathlon Super Series in recent years, both currently placing in the top-five in this year’s junior rankings.
The junior continental cup race will be contested over the sprint distance of a 750m swim, 20.8km bike and 4.75km run.
Challenge Wales (18 June)
Challenge Wales will bring pro triathletes to Pembrokeshire as they swim, bike, run over the middle distance in the latest Challenge Family event.
Tom Bishop will compete over the 70.3 distance for the first time, a week after being part of the Great Britain mixed relay team which claimed silver at AJ Bell 2022 World Triathlon Championship Series Leeds.
There will be a strong British contingent making the most of the opportunity to race in a Challenge Family event in the UK, with Thomas Davis, Harry Palmer, Elliot Smales, Josh Lewis all on the men’s start list.
In the female race, Lucy Byram has already been on a Challenge podium this year, while Tara Grosvenor comes into the event off the back of three IRONMAN 70.3 events in May. Natalie Lawrence and Claire Weller will also be ones to watch.
The course will see triathletes swim 1.9km in the protected waters of Fishguard Bay, followed by a 90km bike taking the athletes out to St. David’s and back with sea views of the Atlantic Ocean, before four laps along a paved coastal track for the 21.2km run.
Challenge Gdansk (19 June)
The Polish city of Gdansk is also gearing up to host one of the Challenge Family events and that’s where Rosie Weston, Emma Cowper and Jack Shayler will all be racing.
All three have represented Great Britain internationally at age group level, including a world age group title for Cowper and a European gold and multiple medals for Weston. Whilst they have both competed in Challenge events already this year, this will be Shayler’s first official pro start over the 70.3 distance.
IRONMAN 70.3 Luxembourg – Region Moselle (19 June)
Emma Pallant-Browne and Lydia Dant will both continue their seasons at IRONMAN 70.3 Luxembourg, a unique event which takes athletes through three different countries.
Both athletes have already celebrated IRONMAN victories in 2022 with Pallant-Brown winning over the 70.3 distance in Mallorca last month, while Dant won over the full IRONMAN distance in Lanzarote four weeks ago.
Located in the heart of Europe, this unique race offers athletes a chance to swim in Germany, bike in France, and run in Luxembourg.
IRONMAN 70.3 Switzerland
James Teagle is the sole British representative in the men’s pro race at IRONMAN 70.3 Switzerland as he goes after qualification for the World IRONMAN 70.3 Championships.
The city of Rapperswil-Jona continues its tradition as the host city of IRONMAN 70.3 Switzerland dating back to 2007. After a lake swim, athletes will tackle a hilly 90km bike course and then a 21.1km run along the lake band and towards the medieval city, where the 112 steps of the Stairway to Heaven awaits.
British Triathlon Super Series at Lochore Meadows (19 June)
Scotland is the next stop in the British Triathlon Super Series where youth and junior athletes will compete over the swim-run format of aquathlon.
Lochore Meadows is the first of the two aquathlon events in this year’s British Triathlon Super Series, with Bowood House hosting the south event a week later. Athletes will only compete in one of the two aquathlons with the two events both carrying equal points.
The junior and youth athletes will complete in three races throughout the day, each over different swim and run distances, with the best two results counting towards the final points total for the event.
BRITISH TRIATHLON SUPER SERIES
Welsh Triathlon Super Series (19 June)
After last weekend’s first standard distance race of this year’s Welsh Triathlon Super Series, it’s back to the sprint distance for the athletes competing this weekend.
Taking place at the same event as Challenge Wales, AWE Fishguard Sprint Triathlon in Pembrokeshire is the third of the six stages making up the 2022 Welsh Triathlon Super Series.
Athletes are awarded points based on their finishing position in the race, which are then added to the points already accumulated in the Super Series so far.
Triathlon England Aquathlon Championships (19 June)
English champions will be crowned in aquathlon when Sywell Sprint Aquathlon hosts the 2022 Triathlon England National Aquathlon Championships on Sunday (19 June).
Sywell Country Park, in Northamptonshire, will welcome Triathlon England members from across the age groups as they race over the swim-run format to become national champion and stand on the Triathlon England podium.
Athletes will begin with a 750m swim in the open water of the retired reservoir, before a 5km run around the lake. To be eligible for a medal, athletes must be a Triathlon England member.
GB Age-Group Qualifier at Cholmondeley Triathlon (19 June)
Cholmondeley Triathlon hosts the first of three qualifying opportunities for age group athletes wanting to qualify to represent the Great Britain Age-Group Team at next year’s European Middle Distance Duathlon Championships.
Part of a bumper two days of swim, bike, run centred around the Cheshire castle, the middle distance duathlon is being held on Sunday and will consist of a 10km run, 64km bike and another 10km run to finish.
Athletes wanting to qualify for a 2023 Championships must register their intent to qualify by 5pm on the Friday before the qualifying event. A full list of qualifying events in 2022 can be found below.
