The Tri4Tokyo Talent Identification Search continues

Published:

The British Paratriathlon team continue to be World leading, but this doesn’t happen by accident. The team are continually striving to be better and are always looking for new talent.

As we look towards the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo and beyond we are extending our search further than we ever have before.

We are specifically looking for athletes who are already competing in triathlon who might be eligible to compete in paratriathlon who may or may not be aware that their impairment could be classifiable.  We are specifically looking for these athletes to help strengthen the competition base of paratriathlon within Britain and to challenge for places in the British Team at international events.

We will be holding a Tri4Tokyo Talent Identification event at Loughborough University on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th April where athletes will be able to go through the classification process to discover if their impairment is classifiable within paratriathlon and we will also do some testing across swim, bike and run.  Additionally there will be a further classification opportunity in Eton Dorney on Sunday 27th May ahead of the Arctic One Tri and Paratri Festival incorporating the Paratriathlon World Cup which take place on Bank Holiday Monday 28th May.

An example of an athlete who may be classifiable but is not aware of it might be an athlete with a visual impairment who does not know that their eyesight is poor enough to compete as a visually impaired athlete; there are several examples of visually impaired athletes across a number of sports who have been competing to a good level for a long time without realising that their impairment was significant enough to be classifiable.  You can find more about the specifics of classification for Visually Impaired athletes by following this link.  Additionally, some athletes with minor foot, leg and arm impairments may not be aware if they are classifiable, but these athletes might have the opportunity to be very competitive in a paratriathlon field.  To find out a little bit more about paratriathlon athletes should look at the Paratriathlon pages of both British Triathlon and the ITU.

Athletes can either apply directly for the Tri4Tokyo event by downloading the application form or if they would like to discuss their impairment and find out a little bit more they can contact British Triathlon’s Paralympic Talent & Development Manager Alasdair Donaldson to discuss their potential eligibility.
