This Girl Can - Sarah

Kicking off our support for Sport England's This Girl Can campaign, we discovered Sarah, someone who's love for the sport has helped her deliver it to more individuals than she ever imagined.

We chatted to Sarah about her story:

"I am a member of Maidstone Harriers running club and when the club decided to branch into triathlon thought it was a brilliant idea and was very keen to have go. I did my first sprint triathlon in East Grinstead in May 2011 and totally got the triathlon bug!

A few years later, the triathlon side of the club was growing and we needed some coaches. A good friend of mine at the club suggested I take on the course myself - something I’d never thought of doing. By day I sit at a desk working as a medical secretary!

I feel life is too short however, so it is always good to push yourself. I agreed to do it and honestly have never looked back since. I completed my Level 1 British Triathlon Federation (BTF) coaching course last year and my Level 2 BTF course this year.

I had wonderful support through Project 500 who helped pay for my Level 2 course and provided me with a mentor who was very supportive and encouraging, especially as she came from a totally different sporting background and so had some different thoughts and ideas. She even came along to watch me coach - I’m not sure who enjoyed that most!

I now regularly coach at track sessions, have run cycling sessions at our local Cyclopark for beginners and improvers as well as coaching every week at our local swimming pool.  The rewards of seeing members achieve their goals, increase their speed, gain confidence and have fun gives me such a buzz. Coaching is something so different to anything I have ever done before but I absolutely love it! It makes you realise that you should push yourself out of your comfort zone once a while and make the most of situations.

Triathlon is such an inclusive sport and available to all; there is so much you can do and learn and tell others above. I really do love it."
