Triathlon coaches recognised for summer successes

Triathlon coaches were amongst those recognised at the annual UK Coaching Awards in London on Tuesday. Following a summer of unparalleled success, five triathlon coaches were recognised with the Mussabini medal.

Jonathon Riall and Steve Casson were recognised by Sports Coach UK for their parts in paratriathlon’s successful debut in Rio, where British triathletes won one gold, two silvers and a bronze medal.

We’ve been on this journey together from the start, and it’s great to be able to reflect on what has been achieved over the last four years.

British Triathlon Head Coach, Ben Bright, received his medal alongside Malcolm Brown and Jack Maitland for their parts in the successes of the Brownlee Brothers, Vicky Holland and Non Stanford.

This is not the first time Brown and Maitland have been recognised; they were presented with the Coaching Chain award in 2012 along with Charles Lines, Tony Kingham and Corrinne Tantrum, who have all coached the Brownlees during their career.

Jonathon Riall, who attended the glittering event at the Holiday Inn Hotel in Wembley, said: “I’m really proud to be awarded with a Mussabini Medal by Sports Coach UK for my role in our teams success this summer, but what makes me more proud is to receive it alongside Steve Casson.”

He added: “We’ve been on this journey together from the start, and it’s great to be able to reflect on what has been achieved over the last four years.”

The Mussabini Medal is awarded to recognise the contribution of coaches of British performers who have achieved outstanding success on the world stage. The award is named after Sam Mussabini, who is considered a pioneer of professional sports coaching. Between the 1908 and 1928 Olympic Games he coached athletes to eleven medals, including five gold.

Gymnastics’ technical director Eddie Van Hoof’s was named UK Coach of the Year after guiding Max Whitlock to double Olympic gold on the floor and pommel this summer. Jürgen Grobler was presented with Lifetime Achievement award for his work with the British Rowing men’s squad at the last seven Olympic Games.
