Triathlon season drawn to close as Super Series finale shines spotlight on future stars

The sixth and final round of the British Triathlon Youth and Junior Super Series saw Leicestershire’s Mallory park come to life today (Saturday 15 September), with four new champions crowned for 2018.

The event took place as part of the British Triathlon Under 20’s Festival, welcoming Britain’s most promising triathlon talent to the start line for a day of exciting head-to-heads. Whilst the event was the final round of the Super Series, British Championship Youth and Junior titles were also up for grabs for the first Briton across the line in each category.

Isla Britton took the tape in the Youth Girls race in 33:30, catapulting her up the series rankings to claim bronze overall. After exiting the water neck and neck, Lizzy Edge and Abigail Smith were left to battle it out for the remaining podium spots, Edge dipping five seconds ahead of Smith, who finished in 33:41.

Britton said: "I loved it, I love Mallory Park it’s my favourite place. The swim was so scrappy I got trapped under both buoys and when I got onto the bike I kind of like charged the pack along making a gap from the chase group. I think we did a pretty good job on the bike and then I had a slow T2 because my feet were freezing but once I got on the run I just did my own pace I didn’t really care what anyone else was doing, just kept running, I’m super pleased."

Despite finishing 12th at Mallory Park, Lily-Jane Evans-Haggerty’s previous results were enough to see her take the Series title, with Barbara De Koning picking up a silver medal.

The Youth Male race was a closely fought battle, eventually won by Jack Stanton-Stock in 30:33, capturing by far his best result in the series so far. A fast finishing Luke Van Oudshoorn couldn’t outsprint Joseph Martin, who took silver in 30:37.

Stanton-Stock said: “It was amazing, I didn’t know how I was doing in the water but out of transition I somehow found myself in third place. On the bike we had a bit of a go on the first lap between two or three of us before Joe Martin came up and we broke away and held it off to create a gap on the bike and we managed to hold onto it for the run where we were neck and neck up until the last 50m.

It’s an amazing atmosphere (at the Under 20's Festival), I’ve been getting used to it for the last few years now and it’s just getting better and better. We’re all friends among our competitive group and have an amazing time before and after the race. During the race we even put a few jokes in there, it’s an amazing experience."

Martin picked up the Series title following a collection of top-5 results this season. Hamish Reilly was second, with Matt Howard in third.

With all three 2018 Junior Women’s Super Series medallists, Kate Waugh, Iona Miller and Erin Wallace, out on the Gold Coast for the ITU World Triathlon Grand Final, it left an opportunity for athletes to make their bid for top points in Mallory Park.

Eventual winner, Sinead Clark, exited the water just behind the leaders and a swift T1 saw her quickly out onto the bike with Sophia Green. The pair pushed the pace, joined by a small group of athletes, and held on during the run. Clocking the quickest time on foot by some margin, Jess Humphreys clawed her way back through the field during the run and just managed to clinch the silver in 1:06.03; three seconds behind Clark.

Clark said: "I think the bike went pretty well, we broke away from the main group, and even though we didn't really work as well as I'd hoped we still added extra time onto them. Onto the run the first three laps we're quite comfortable and then the last lap Jess Humphreys caught us up and the last lap was a faster lap.

I was fifth before the race as I missed out a couple a races this year to do Europeans so I was hoping just to move up the table a bit and I think I've done that slightly."

Despite Clark’s win at the Series final, she had to settle for second in the standings, with Annabel Morton taking top honours. Casarena Ferreira took up the final podium spot.

The Junior Men’s race saw a convincing win from French athlete, Guillaume Hay, an impressive run sealing a victory of 17 seconds. Noah Canby however took the British Junior title in what was only his second appearance in the Series, with Guy Evans-Haggerty awarded the silver medal, ahead of Cameron Main.

Evans-Haggerty equalled this in the overall standings, taking Junior Men’s Super Series silver, but it was Marcus Dey who earned gold after an impressive 2018 results sheet. Fynn Batkin was in third place.
