Nottingham is set to welcome elite triathletes back to the city for the Accenture World Triathlon Mixed Relay Nottingham on Saturday 15 June. The event will also see over 700 amateur triathletes, including first timers and children, cross the finish line on the bank of the River Trent.
The event format has changed to a duathlon (run, bike, run), as a result of persistent rainfall in the local area. The decision has been made in consultation with a number of stakeholders and water safety experts. The results of the latest tests (issued today Thursday 13 June) clearly show that the increased flow rate and adverse water quality will make the swim segment unsafe for all participants.
Despite the change, the event is still set to be an exciting affair with elite athletes and age groupers alike coming to Nottingham’s Victoria Embankment.
Athletes from around the world will descend on Victoria Embankment, Nottingham, for the second part of the British World Series double-header. The Accenture World Triathlon Mixed Relay Nottingham will see the elite athletes come together in teams of two men and two women to represent their country. With Olympic qualification points on offer, the elite race is set to be action packed on the compact course.
Flying the flag for the British Team in this international field will be Georgia Taylor-Brown (Leeds), Sophie Coldwell (Loughborough), Ben Dijkstra (Loughborough) and Alex Yee (Leeds). The Brits have been showing good form following Georgia Taylor-Brown’s storming victory at the AJ Bell World Triathlon Leeds on 9 June, where Coldwell also came across the line in 9th place and Yee took 15th place across the city’s challenging course.
Alongside the Brits, 14 international teams will be vying for the top spot on the Nottingham podium. With a number of international teams choosing to field younger athletes, the event will showcase the next generation of World Series stars. The teams from France and USA will be looking to replicate their top three finishes from 2018, with the French team boasting two top-10 athletes from last weekend’s AJ Bell World Triathlon Leeds.
The event will also play host to the 2019 British Sprint Distance Championship. A unique draft-legal racing opportunity, the Championships will see some of Britain’s top age-group talent come together to battle it out for the British Championship title in five-year age categories. Also taking place ahead of the elite action will be a GO TRI race giving first timers the opportunity to try triathlon; and races for 11-14 year olds giving them a taste of a World Series event.
With something for the whole family to get involved with, the Event Village will be a hub of activity from midday. Food outlets, triathlon retailors, and activities for all ages will give plenty to get involved with, before the elite racing starts at 4pm to bring the curtain down on Accenture World Triathlon Mixed Relay Nottingham.
