World Series events headline weekend of triathlon and paratriathlon

World Series racing in triathlon and paratriathlon headline the weekend’s swim, bike, run action as the World Triathlon Para Series heads to Montreal and the World Triathlon Championship Series reaches Hamburg.

There’s also the Triathlon England Middle Distance Championships in Eastbourne and two Great Britain Age-Group Team qualifiers at Woodhorn Museum Triathlon in Northumberland.

World Triathlon Para Series Montreal (8 July)

An elite paratriathlon race is back on the schedule in Montreal for the first time since 2019 and takes place two weeks after the excitement of the World Triathlon Championship Series racing in the city.

Friday (8 July) will see Oscar Kelly, guided by Charlie Harding, Michael Salisbury and Finley Jakes race in Montreal as athletes from around the world head to Canada to compete in the second World Triathlon Para Series event of 2022.

Ile Notre-Dame will host the racing on Friday and is the venue for Montreal’s F1 races, with the athletes competing on part of the track.

Salisbury is the first British athlete to start at 12:30 BST in the men’s PTS5, Kelly and Harding will start at 12:37 in the men’s PTVI, while Jakes will be the last of the British athletes to start when the men’s PTS4 race begins at 12:55 BST.

World Triathlon Championship Series Hamburg (9-10 July)

The latest leg of the World Triathlon Championship Series heads to Hamburg this weekend with both individual and mixed relay action.

Beth Potter, who claimed her first World Triathlon Championship Series medal in Montreal, heads to Hamburg as the highest ranked athlete on the female start list, which also includes Sian Rainsley and Kate Waugh, who were both in the top-10 in Hamburg last year.

In the men’s race, Sam Dickinson competes having been part of the silver medal winning mixed relay team in Montreal, with Barclay Izzard returning to Hamburg, where he competed in 2020, his only WTCS race to date.

Following the individual races on Saturday, Sunday will see national teams of two men and two women line up for the mixed relay.

The women’s race starts at 12:35 BST with the men’s race starting at 14:35 BST. Similarly to the individual racing on Saturday, the mixed relay will be shown live on BBC and TriathlonLIVE, with the first athletes diving in at 14:00 BST.

IRONMAN Switzerland Thun (10 July)

Chantal Sainter and Tara Grosvenor will both compete at IRONMAN Switzerland Thun in the heart of the Alps.

Sainter will be back on the start line a week after finishing seventh at IRONMAN 70.3 Les Sables D’Olonne last weekend, while Grosvenor’s last race resulted in a second-place finish at Challenge Wales and came off the back of three IRONMAN 70.3 finishes in May.

Athletes competing in the race in Switzerland will begin with a one-loop 2.4-mile swim in Lake Thun, before a 112-mile hilly bike route and a three-loop 26.2-mile run course – all with the backdrop of the Alps.

IRONMAN Vitoria-Gasteiz (10 July)

Colin Norris will compete at IRONMAN Vitoria-Gasteiz in northern Spain's Basque Country, province of Álava.

Although it was a DNF for Norris at IRONMAN Texas in April, Norris did finish fourth at IRONMAN 70.3 Warsaw last month and will return to the pro start line this weekend in Spain.

The 2.4-mile swim takes place in the Ulibarri-Gamboa lake, before the three-loop 112-mile bike course and then a 42.2km run around the city centre of Vitoria-Gasteiz.

Triathlon England Middle Distance Championships (10 July)

It’s a trip to the coast this weekend for age group athletes wanting to be crowned national champions at the Triathlon England Middle Distance Championships on Sunday (10 July).

Age group athletes will compete at the IronBourne Long Distance Triathlon in Eastbourne with the opportunity to become national champion in their age group. The event includes one of the most iconic starts on the triathlon calendar, with a jump off the end of Eastbourne’s historic pier.

To be eligible for a Triathlon England National Championship medal, athletes must hold a valid Triathlon England membership with medals awarded to the first three eligible male and female competitors in each age category.

CHAMPIONSHIPS

Great Britain Age-Group Team Qualifiers (9 July)

There will be two opportunities to qualify for the Great Britain Age-Group Team at Woodhorn Museum Triathlon as the event hosts qualifiers for both the 2023 World Standard Distance Triathlon Championships and 2023 European Sprint Distance Triathlon Championships.

The Woodhorn Museum Triathlon is located within the grounds of Woodhorn Museum and Queen Elizabeth II Country Park.

Athletes must register their intent to qualify for the 2023 Championships by 5pm on the Friday before the qualifying race, as well as entering the qualifying race itself.
