Jonny Brownlee prepares to take on his first standard distance triathlon of 2019 in Bermuda, with Great Britain’s women facing a tough field in the second ITU World Triathlon Series event of the year, despite the withdrawal of the Island’s own Flora Duffy.
Brownlee will start as Great Britain’s sole participant in the men’s race on Saturday and will be looking to post a strong performance ahead of the Tokyo Test Event in August, where Olympic selectors will be casting a keen eye. Having nudged out Britain’s Alex Yee to take the first ITU World Triathlon Series title of the year in Abu Dhabi last month, Spaniard Mario Mola starts as number one and will be looking to replicate his performance on the testing course this weekend.
All three Norwegian athletes that made up the somewhat ‘surprise’ podium in 2018 return to the line-up for a second shot at success.
2018 World Champion, Vicky Holland, is one of four Brits set to start in the women’s race; joined by World Championship bronze medallist, Georgia Taylor-Brown, WTS Abu Dhabi bronze medallist, Jess Learmonth and Non Stanford. Whilst the women’s start list lacks two-time World Champion, Flora Duffy, who had hoped to make her return from injury on home soil, USA’s Katie Zaferes will look to continue her recent fine run of form and dominate proceedings. It was 12 months ago that saw the American and Holland partake in a sprint finish in Bermuda, with the Briton eventually claiming silver.
Jonny Brownlee, 2016 Olympic silver medallist, said:
“It’s great to be back out racing knowing I’m in good shape. Singapore [Super League] was definitely a confidence boost, but this weekend will be the real test. The course in Bermuda is new to me, but I know from watching the guys compete last year that it has its quirks and you never quite know how things will unfold. It’s the start of an important year.”
The ITU World Triathlon Series reaches UK soil in June, with the AJ Bell World Triathlon Leeds taking place 8-9 June, followed by the Accenture World Triathlon Mixed Relay Nottingham a week later on 15 June.
