Youngsters put on a show as AJ Bell World Triathlon Leeds gets underway

Britain’s top rising talent were the headline attraction in Roundhay Park on Saturday 9 June, kicking off two days of non-stop triathlon action at the AJ Bell World Triathlon Leeds.

The TriStar 3’s were the first in the spotlight, with Tom Hattee crossing the line first in 27:41, ahead of Daniel Galloway.

Hattee said: “I felt strong in the last 100m and felt I could have gone for another 2k. Next up for me is Eton Dorney in a few weeks’ time then hopefully make the IRC team later in the year.”

Olivia Logan cut the tape in the TriStar 3 girls race with 29:54 on the clock. Hannah Mitchell had to settle for second place, just nine seconds adrift.

Logan commented: “I love this course; this is one of my favourite races. The atmosphere is so nice, I just love racing here in Leeds. Next up for me is the North West Championships.”

In the TriStar 2 races, it was Rory Bryant and Lucy Phillips who took the respective boys and girls titles.

Bryant, who clocked 26:26, said: “It was really fun - it was a hard hilly course so I thought I did well to finish first.”

Casper Whitewood finished in second place in 26:33.

Phillips added: “It was really good race – it’s a tough course, really hilly and I am pleased I stayed out in front and pushed hard. I am looking forward to all of my upcoming and my aim is to get to the IRC’s like last year and to try and win at Mallory Park.”

She finished in 26:56, a convincing 30 seconds ahead of Imogen Wolff in second place.

The AJ Bell World Triathlon Leeds also marked the halfway point in the British Triathlon Youth and Junior Super Series.

Joseph Martin took his first series win, finishing two places ahead of current series lead, Hamish Reilly. Dominic Coy held on for silver.

Martin said: “I worked my tactics on the bike, so coming on to the run my legs were shot I was just trying to hold Dom off!”

The youth female race saw Barbara de Koning go top of the podium in 37:40, adding to the bronze she claimed at Sospan Triathlon last month. Isla Britton was nine seconds behind her to take the silver.

The champion said: “It was a really good race; we found it quite tough but we all worked really hard. I got away on the bike and made sure I kept that up for the run. Hilly courses suit me and I really wanted to win here today so I’m glad I have!”

The Junior Men’s race saw a battle between Calum Young, Oliver Makinson and Marcus Dey, the latter eventually taking the honours in 33:39.

Dey commented: “It wasn’t how I thought the race would pan out if I am honest, I ended up smashing the swim and when I looked behind me I saw I had quite a lead, so thought why not go for it? I got a good bike leg - a few lads caught up at the end of the bike but I managed to pull away at the start of the run despite my legs feeling pretty dead. I just held on for as long as I could. My aim will be pushing for top three in the Series at the end of the season.”

Erica Byram put in a strong all-round performance to take Junior Women’s gold in 37:47. Annabel Morton and Kate Gallagher took up the final podium spots.

Byram said: “We got a good group on the bike then worked together well and caught the few who had better swims. I just put my head down on the run and went as fast as I ever have just to stay away - I am really happy. I am doing some European Cups abroad so that will be first international experience which will be really exciting.”
