Daniel Dixon Reflects on Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games

Published:

Future Olympic hopeful Daniel Dixon reflects on the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and his ambitions of representing Team GB at a future Games. Dixon has represented Great Britain multiple times on the European stage, most recently securing individual gold at the 2021 Europe Triathlon Junior Cup Tiszaujvaros.

Inspired by the success of Team GB at the Olympic Games, Dixon’s Olympic memories began long before Tokyo 2020 and featured one third of swim, bike, run.

“My earliest memory of watching the Olympics is in 2008, sitting on my nannas sitting room floor and seeing Michael Phelps swimming,” Dixon described. “Back then they were allowed to wear the 'super suits' in the pool and they were all swimming so fast.”

Fast forward thirteen years and Daniel was watching Team GB take home mixed relay gold and two individual silvers after incredible debut performances from Alex Yee and Georgia Taylor-Brown at Tokyo 2020.

“It was awesome, certainly an exciting race from both the men’s and the women’s. The men’s as predicted was a run race which wasn't quite as interesting as a breakaway but I still enjoyed it and to see Alex bring home a medal was great.

“I thought the women’s was more exciting and I loved the breakaway aspect of the race. Again, this saw Georgia bring home another medal which was just unreal. The team relay, one word...golden. It really makes you believe that you are in a great system coming from Britain and it makes me 100% want to be a part of the Paris 2024 team.”

When asked about his role model from the Olympic Games, Dixon said: “The men's Olympic champion Kristian Blummenfelt. I have trained with him numerous times in some awesome locations like Sierra Nevada at high altitude in Spain, Malta and in Jersey too. He is such a great guy, an awesome athlete and his work ethic, belief and drive is second to none.”

On competing at a future Olympic Games, Dixon said: “The reason why I've got out of bed every day for as long as I can remember now, the answer is simple, yes. I've targeted Olympic gold for pretty much the entire of my triathlon career and that will never leave me, nothing I want more.”
