Brighton and Hove Triathlon 2019

Published:

Now in its 4th year, some of the best athletes in South of England will be coming to Brighton in September to compete in one of the most famous venues in the country.

Brighton and Hove Triathlon takes place on 15th September 2019 .

With the scenic Brighton Regency backdrop, the Pier and colourful beach huts, Hove will play host to the Brighton and Hove Triathlon this year. The event will offer four different disciplines of Sprint, Super Sprint, Olympic and a sprint drafting race.

It’s a tried and tested venue with smooth closed seafront roads and begins with a challenging sea swim off Hove lawns.

The experienced Race Director John Lunt, who was the Competition Manager for Triathlon at London 2012, has staged over 500+ events and was instrumental in designing Hove Lawns as a super triathlon venue.

The races start with the inspirational children’s Triathlon( aged 8 -16 year olds) who race over reduced distances. Youth development and developing the sport in Brighton is one of the key objectives of staging events here.

An Ideal baptism for triathlon beginners, the super sprint races start on the water’s edge of the famous Brighton Beach and run into the water for their 400m swim. The rectangular course allows athletes to swim no further than 100m offshore.  Supported by over 20 Brighton beach lifeguards, athletes swim in a clockwise direction and exit up a carpeted beach towards the Promenade and then straight in to the transition area.

With over 1500 athletes expected to race this year (including children) you will need to indentify your racking position before you start.

Transition on Hove Lawns is a hard grass surface so bare feet running is ok.  Exit the transition area and then you are out on the flat, fast Brighton seafront road which is an out and back looped 5km course.

The sea will be on your left for half the ride and you will be able to see others beginning their swims as you cycle round the multi-lap course. The smooth tarmac provides a fast loop although if it’s windy it can be quite exposed and challenging.   Getting into an aero position early into the race will certainly help your performance.  There is the potential for some fast bike times over the accurate bike course.

Once back into transition, rack your bike, helmet off, shoes on and it’s out for a fast flat run along the Brighton and Hove seafront promenade.

As you run out of transition you will need to adjust your pace and ease your cycling legs into their running mode.  Depending on which distance entered, it will be a number of laps of an out and back flat tarmaced course.

The course is ideal for spectators. They can see you at some point of every lap (this is also true for the bike) as per the bike, as you are running you will see the other waves starting their swim and the bike laps will be visible.

The multi lap run course will able you to monitor your progress against your rivals.

Once down the finish straight, you get that all important finishers’ medal, meet up with your support team and bask in your finish glory....!.

For those British Triathlon members, this year we have been honoured with being a qualifier event for the ITU Worlds and the European Championships.
