Events return to the region

Published:

The first events of 2021 took place in the South Central region on Sunday 25 April following British Triathlon guidance for event organisers and participants.

The Formula 5 Duathlon took place at the Emberton Country Park in a twist on the traditional duathlon format. Instead of three legs, participants completed five, alternating between 5km run legs and 2km bike legs in a run, bike, run, bike, run.

The three 5km run legs took place around the park, running on the tarmac paths around the lakes and grass routes through the nearby fields.

Both of the 20km bike legs covered a loop of the local area, taking in villages including Gayhurst and Lathbury before returning to the park.

Also taking place on the 25th was the Fast Twitch Southampton Duathlon. Setting off from Applemore Leisure Centre, participants completed a 5km run, 20km bike and a second 5km run.

The two runs were a loop from the leisure centre to Dibden Purlieu and back again, with the bike route leading participants through the New Forest National Park and via the village of Beaulieu.

Originally a sprint distance triathlon, the first leg was changed to a run in response to the British Triathlon Covid-19 event guidance, with only non-competitive events with a swim leg allowed until four weeks after public swimming pools reopen.

Other guidance for events includes staggered time-trial starts and pre-race online briefings to avoid gatherings and ensure social distancing around the event site, as well as increased on-site sanitation and hygiene.
