Important information on COVID-19 – updated Tuesday 24 March

Published:

Based on the latest government instruction around Coronavirus/COVID-19, and in line with other national governing bodies, British Triathlon, the three Home Nations (Triathlon England, Triathlon Scotland and Welsh Triathlon) and the Triathlon Trust have decided to extend the suspension of triathlon activity until at least 30 June.

We have not taken this decision lightly but in light of the rapidly changing situation, we feel it is essential to extend the period of suspension. The most recent instruction from the government is to stay at home for the coming weeks and even after that period, we expect to have a period of continued restriction of movement and activity. We therefore feel that it is our duty to take these steps to help protect the health and wellbeing of athletes, officials, coaches, volunteers and spectators and to alleviate the risk of an additional burden on the emergency services at a hugely testing time.

The government has been quite clear in its instruction for the public to stay at home with some defined exceptions. The exceptions include exercising once a day – to run, walk or cycle - and must only be done alone or with members of your household.

We appreciate that this is a very difficult time for everyone involved in our sport, but we do ask for your support as we navigate through this period of uncertainty. We are doing everything we can to support members, clubs, coaches, committees and academies as well as those businesses who run triathlon events.

As you will be aware, the British Triathlon offices are currently closed and our teams are working from home, so please bear with us if you need to contact us – we will get back to you as soon as we can. Please also visit our website at www.britishtriathlon.org

Andy Salmon, Chief Executive of British Triathlon said: “This really is an unprecedented situation and we are navigating unchartered waters. The recent instruction from the government has been unequivocal in insisting that we stay at home and it is our duty to do as we are instructed. As a sport, we will come through this and I look forward to a time when we can resume our full range of activities.”
