South East Tristar Athletes crowned IRC champions 2019

What a weekend! September 7-8 saw British Triathlon’s Big Weekend take place at the Mallory Park racetrack in Leicestershire. The program included the Inter Regional Championships (IRCs) for Tristar 2 and Tristar 3 athletes on the Saturday and the Accenture Tristar Mixed Relay Cup on the Sunday. The South East team came out on top in both events and were crowned champions!

The IRCs is where all 10 English regions as well as Scotland, Wales and Jersey, compete against each other in teams of 16, in an individual event and a team competition.  The South East team was selected based on performances through the season.  In a fabulous 2 days of racing, the South East came out on top and were crowned IRC Champions 2019 on the Saturday and took the Accenture Tristar Mixed Relay Cup the following day.

There were some outstanding individual performances.  Alex Dack (Deal Tri Club) came 2nd in the Tristar 2 boys race, while the Tristar 2 girls race was dominated by the athletes from Medway Tri Club with Lauren Mitchell in 2nd place, Alice Stawowska in 3rd and Gabriella Horne in 6th place.

Oliver Horne (Medway Tri Club) and Tom Hutton (Deal Tri Club) came 6th and 7th respectively in the Tristar 3 boys race while Daisy Burton (Bodyworks XTC) finished just outside the top ten in the same category girls race.

It was this depth of talent and the performances of each and every team member that led to the South East taking the win.  Brilliant racing, and well done to all the South East athletes!

The Accenture Tristar Mixed Relay Cup

The next morning saw the team preparing for the mixed relay events.  The South East entered four teams of four athletes with the fastest two teams being counted in the results.  And despite giving their all on the Saturday, the South East athletes once again showed their strength.  It was fast and furious over the technical Mallory Park race track.  Cool heads were needed!  The South East’s two fastest teams came 2nd and 7th out of the fifty teams and this was more than enough to win the Accenture Tristar Mixed Relay Cup!

The performance of the South East team was the result of lots of hard work over the season.  The athletes were skilful, organised, well prepared, made good racing decisions, and were an absolute credit to their club coaches.   Above all, this was truly a team effort, and behind the scenes, parents, coaches, clubs and supporters all contributed to the success.  Well done South East!
