IRC Selection 2024

Qualify for the South West Team

To be eligible for selection to the Inter-Regional Championships (IRC's) Team, athletes must be members of Triathlon England with South West on their Membership Card.

The 2024 criteria for South West region representation are designed and will be applied to ensure that the best athletes can be taken to the Inter Regional Championships (IRCs) being held on September 14th and 15th at Mallory Park in Leicestershire. In 2024, the format for the IRC's for will be heats and finals and there will also be an opportunity for selected athletes to race in a mixed relay triathlon event.

South West IRC Qualification

The 2024 criteria for South West region representation are designed and will be applied to ensure that the best athletes can be taken to the Inter-Regional Championships.

There will be two selection events.  Athletes wishing to be selected should enter BOTH of these events.

The Team will be selected as follows:

1. Vale Tridents Aquathon 25th May – Winner

2. Mallory Park Triathlon 30th June – Winner

3. Overall Winner of the Series

4. Discretionary Place

If either the Open Water Aquathlon and or the Open Water Triathlon are cancelled or the events distances are significantly reduced for any reason the athletes selected at either or both point 1 and point 2 will instead be drawn from the 2nd and (if required) 3rd placed athletes in the SWS.

The team selected will be notified in writing by the end of the first week of July following a Regional Committee Meeting to confirm the 4th placed athlete, selected as a Discretionary Pick from their swim performance. Whilst it is not necessary to complete the series, it would be advantages to do so. Those who qualify will be invited to Pre-IRC Training.

• The starting order of the Athletes at the IRC's will be decided by the Junior Series Coordinator and announced at the Pre- IRC training. The decision will be based predominantly on their swim performance throughout the Series.

Supporting Notes and Scenarios:

If there are not 3 different winners across the selection races the following will happen;

1. Should an athlete win both the Aquathlon and Triathlon as well as the overall SW Series, that athlete will take the place of the Overall Winner of the Series. The second placed athletes in the Triathlon and Aquathlon will then be selected providing their finish time is within 97% of the first placed athlete.

a. If the second placed athlete has taken 2nd place in both the Aquathlon and Triathlon the third athlete selected to the team will be decided by the Regional Committee taking into account their place in the Series AND their % finish time behind the first placed athlete in the Aquathlon for the TS2 and Triathlon for the TS3.

2. If the same athlete places first in 2 out of the 3 selectable points the remaining place will be filled as follows;

a. Same athlete wins the Series and OW Triathlon – 2nd place in the Series will be selected.

b. Same athlete wins the OW Triathlon and OW Aquathlon – 2nd place in the Triathlon will be selected (NB their finish time must be within 97% of their first placed athlete)

3. If any athlete considered for selection in the above scenarios is required to BUT DOES NOT finish within 97% of the winners time that place will then be decided by the Regional Committee taking into account an athletes place in the SW Series or swim performance.

4. Given the number of different selectable opportunities available within this policy there will be no right of appeal against any kind mishap, whether within or outside of the athletes control, during any of the selection events

5. There will be no right of appeal against IRC selection decisions made by the SW Committee under this policy. The provisions of the BTF Selection and Nomination Appeals Procedure do not apply in this case .

Pre-IRC Training 2024

Following the Team Selection, the four TS2 and four TS3 girls and boys in both age groups will be selected to represent Team SW at the British Triathlon U20’s Festival at Mallory Park, Leicestershire.

There will be a 3 day pre-IRC training camp on the 2nd, 3rd & 4th August for team SW to train together ahead of IRCs.

The training will include transitions, brick session, open water training including starts, turns and drafting and finishing with some mini races.
