Cardiff Triathletes Gold List Case Study

‘Motivating your club members to join Welsh Triathlon’

Cardiff Triathletes offers coached sessions throughout the Cardiff area (4 x swim sessions, brick session, 2 x run sessions, clinical Pilates, 2 x strength and conditionings, plus group cycle rides a group trail runs). Cardiff Triathletes also prides itself on an active social calendar including weekends away in Bala and Tenby supporting the Big Bala Bash and Ironman Wales, Bake Off cooking challenge and BBQ evenings. Cardiff Triathletes is also proud that we help organise 3 events each year – duathlon, aquathlon and an open water triathlon. The Club also supports 2 charities each year, whereby the funds from each of the clubs’ organised events go to supporting the charities.

What was the main motivation behind encouraging your club to achieve 100% membership?

By achieving 100% membership, this enabled the club to support our sport, by contributing to Welsh Triathlon’s development of the sport in Wales. Ensuring that all of the club members joined Welsh Triathlon also meant that each individual was insured while training with the club as well as when they represent the club at races. Welsh Triathlon membership also provided members with reduced race entry cost as well as discounts from Welsh Triathlon’s partners.

Was it difficult to get the rest of your members on board with this?

For the Cardiff Triathletes the process of getting club members on board was not difficult at all. As a club, the aim was to ensure that all current and future members are educated on the benefits of becoming a member, including the low cost per year. With this the club also highlighted the benefits of membership such as insurance for racing and training as well as discounts from Welsh Triathlon’s partners.

If anything, what else made the process of achieving 100% membership difficult?

As a club there weren’t any difficulties in achieving 100% membership due to the fact that members bought into the benefits. At times there were many members who had joined the club, thus the committee agreed that they would allow time for members to join Welsh Triathlon.

What is the biggest benefit of having 100% membership?

For Cardiff Triathletes, the different benefits of membership suited members depending on their motivation and level of activity within the sport. The discounted entry fees was the main benefit for new members, while discounts and eligibility to compete at age group level benefited the more experienced members. As a club committee there was also a reassurance that everyone who is part of the club is insured and covered when training or representing the club at races.

What advice would you give other clubs looking to achieve this?

For any club looking to achieve 100% membership, Cardiff Triathletes recommend that there is a need to highlight the benefits over the costs to each member. At £45 per year (with club discount) if individuals enter 4 races a year, they will have covered the cost of their day license with the added benefit for insurance and discounts from the UK’s top triathlon brands.
