Welsh Triathlon are looking forward to working with our incredible event organisers across Wales to see the return of a full National Championship calendar for the 2022 season. Events will be spread across the whole of Wales, enabling everyone within our wider triathlon community to engage in a National Championship event, and there’s also a new addition to the calendar that clubs can get their teeth into.
The National Championship will return to its traditional format for 2022, with all National Championships being held as stand-alone events. It will simply be winner takes all on the day at each of the events, and with them, the potential to compete for Tim tri Cymru at the 2023 British Championships. There is no need to pre-register your intention to compete for a National Championship award. All you need to do is enter your event of choice, and make sure you’re a Welsh Triathlon Member. All Welsh Triathlon members will automatically be considered within the Welsh Championship races, as well as any British Championship races as they are a Home Nations member.
The first event of our 2022 Calendar heads north to Harlech, where participants can compete for the Duathlon Championships at the Harlech Sprint Duathlon. Originally a National Championship in 2021, this event is one of those who got cancelled due to covid. Don’t miss out on an early season opportunity to battle it out for national honours under the shadow of the iconic Harlech castle on Sunday 27th March 2022.
Next up, the newest addition to the National Championship calendar, the Mixed Team Relay National Championships at Llanelli. As part of a wider weekend of activity which will include the Welsh Triathlon Super Series Llanelli Sprint Triathlon, Children’s Aquathlon and a full day of British Triathlon Pathway racing, the Club Mixed Relay will take place on Saturday 14th May 2022. Affiliated Welsh Triathlon Clubs will be required to enter teams of two males and two females as they compete against one another for the Mixed Relay title, a race run in the same format as that made popular by the British winning Olympic team at Tokyo last summer.
The next event heads west to the Wales Triathlon Cymru Middle Distance event at Fishguard on Saturday 18th June. A Welsh Government test event in 2021 and a crucial part of the wider event sector reopening, Fishguard will host the middle-distance championship on the Saturday, as well as a Welsh Triathlon Super Series stage at the Fishguard Sprint triathlon on the Sunday (19th June 2022).
The following weekend, we head to the capital, and the Cardiff Sprint Triathlon*. Part of a full weekend of activity, Cardiff will also host the 2022 Tim Tri Cymru Sprint Team as they compete in the closed road, draft legal British Sprint Championship. The Welsh Sprint Championship will be part of the same race, enabling Welsh Triathlon members to battle across three fronts on one afternoon. As well as this event, the weekend boasts a non-drafting super sprint, sprint, standard and new legend middle distance event over the weekend.

For our standard championships, we head North on the opening weekend of September as Llyn Tegid and Bala hosts the National Standard Championship. Held on closed roads, this rolling course favourite returned back to the domestic calendar last year. Welsh triathlon members will also need to compete at here to qualify for the 2023 Tim tri Cymru for the 2023 British Standard Championship.
When confirmed, we will also head to the river Wye and Monmouth, venue for the National Aquathlon championships. Having been aptly substituted by the SWYD Aqua event in 2021 due to calendar covid congestion, the National champs will be hosted by Monmouth Triathlon Club. As soon as a date is confirmed, this will be published.
Our final Welsh National Championship for 2022 will take place in the wooded hills of Afan Argoed and the Escape to Afan Sprint Duathlon on November 26th 2022, as members compete for the National Cross Duathlon Championship.
