Welsh Triathlon Launches New Innovative Strategy

Published:

As one of the fast-growing sports in Wales, Welsh Triathlon is building on its achievements through a new 10-year strategy which focuses on three pillars of Success, Inclusion and Sustainability. The aim is to become a fully inclusive, socially conscious organisation, where physical health and mental wellbeing is equal to financial sustainability and international success.

The new strategy is about more than sport, aiming to deliver against social inequalities throughout Wales by:

  • Making the sport accessible and bringing triathlon and multisport activity to every community in Wales.
  • Taking an inclusive approach to improve representation and diversity.
  • Working with local authorities and schools to provide physical literacy provision through life skills of swimming and cycling for every child in Wales.
  • Developing a fully supported workforce which is able to deliver across the whole of Wales.

To celebrate the new strategy, Welsh Triathlon is hosting an inclusive event at Parc Bryn Bach, Tredegar, on Sunday 5th September and will be attended by the Welsh Government’s Deputy Minister for Arts & Sport, Dawn Bowden MS. On the day, Welsh Triathlon will be showcasing our inclusive entry level activities which include coached open water swim sessions, Tri Active Cymru (TAC) children’s sessions and GO TRI Aquathlon. The activities are a great example of the programmes Welsh Triathlon facilitates to help encourage participation in communities so that can enjoy the vast benefit is of being in a fun and challenging sport.

Dawn Bowden, Deputy Minister for the Arts and Sport said:

“I am pleased to support this strategy and its principles - promoting equal access to the sport and supporting young athletes mirrors Welsh Government priorities. I am also very pleased that we can again enjoy more participation in sporting activities as we begin looking beyond the pandemic and wish Welsh Triathlon continued success in growing the sport and growing a diverse membership.”

Brian Davies, Director Systems, Sport Wales said:

“Welsh Triathlon has made a significant move to place the well-being of the people at the heart of its strategy using triathlon as a multisport to engage with all people, from the very young as they start their physical literacy journey to the older generations who are able to participate in their age group.  We welcome the alignment with the Sport Wales Strategy and look forward to witnessing the impact of its programmes on the health of the nation.”

Professor Martin Kitchener, Welsh Triathlon Chair said:

“Having joined Welsh Triathlon last year as Chair of the Board, I am delighted we are introducing a robust, evidence-based strategy to further increase the positive impact of our sport. The staff and directors are very excited to be part of this exciting initiative which clearly places the health and well-being of our communities at its heart.”

Beverley Lewis, CEO Welsh Triathlon said

“The triathlon community in Wales has come together throughout the pandemic and shown how swim, bike, run can support and change people’s lives.  Our strategy brings together all that positive learning into a direction which will enhance people’s well-being through triathlon whether that’s through participation, performance, training, keeping active, learning new skills, or just watching and enjoying the existing and new innovative formats of the sport.  I am delighted to be presenting this strategy and working with an enthusiastic staff to deliver on its goals.”
