Athletes can be invited to be members of the Performance Centre if they are one of the following:
- An athlete competing at elite level in draft-legal events;
- A Cardiff Metropolitan University student;
- A Cardiff University student; OR
- Additional athletes who can evidence the ability to enhance the training environment
The National Triathlon Performance Centre (NTPCW) is made up of two squads; a Performance Squad and a Development Squad, which each consist of up to 16 athletes.
Squad membership for both the Performance & Development is decided by selection by the coaching team. These selections are currently made using a combination of:
- Triathlon Race Results
- Single-Discipline Performances
Currently the guideline minimum standards* for the Performance Squad are:
For JUNIOR (17-19 yo) athletes:
- Top-20 overall finish in a BTF elite event or a European Junior Championships
- Top-8 finish in a BTF Junior TRIATHLON event
OR
- A total benchmarking score of 4 or higher, for example:
- MEN: 09:20 800m Swim + 15:40 5km Run
- WOMEN: 10:05 800m Swim + 18:30 5km Run
For U23 (20-21yo) athletes:
- Top-12 finish in a BTF Elite event or European Junior Championships
- Podium finish in a BTF Junior TRIATHLON event
OR
- A total benchmarking score of 6 or higher, for example:
- WOMEN: 09:55 800m Swim + 18:00 5km Run
- MEN: 09:10 800m Swim + 15:20 5km Run
For U23 (22-23yo) athletes:
- Top-12 finish in a non-European Continental Cup
- Top-5 finish in a BTF elite event
- A total benchmarking score of 8 or higher, for example:
- WOMEN: 09:45 800m Swim + 17:30 5km Run
- MEN: 09:00 800m Swim + 15:00 5km Run
For Senior (24yo+) athletes:
- Top-12 finish in a European Continental Cup
- Top-5 finish in a non-European Continental Cup
- Winner in a BTF elite event
For Paratriathletes:
- Top-8 in a World Paratriathlon Championship Series event
- Top-5 finish in a World Paratriathlon Cup event
- Winner of a BTF Super Series event
- Delivery of Next Generation single discipline benchmarks in at least two of the three disciplines over a verified course distance
*Please note that standards are a guideline only, selections are at the discretion of the Selection Panel, in order to satisfy the objectives of the selection policy
For the Development Squad, we encourage athletes from a broad range of backgrounds to apply for selection. We are looking for athletes who have the potential to:
- Add value to the training environment
- Contribute positively to University BUCS performances OR
- Progress to Performance Squad level in the future

Athlete Support
In addition to the coaching, facility access and sports science support that comes with being part of NTPCW, athletes on our Performance Squad are able to apply for additional support from the University sport programmes, which enable free access to additional support services, such as physio, massage, nutrition.
