It has been another brilliant year of triathlon in the Yorkshire Region. Not only have we welcomed many new members in to our triathlon clubs but we have new coaches, new events and many first time triathletes through the successful GO TRI programme.

To celebrate 2019 and to start making plans for 2020 we would like to invite you all to the AGM and Awards on Saturday 30th November, starting at 12.30pm, where the winners of the Workforce Awards will be presented.

Venue: The Brownlee Centre, Leeds.

Well done to all of the winners and to those who were nominated.  This year we have recieved the highest amount of nominations ever.  This made it very difficult for the committee to decide on the final winners but we have throughly enjoyed reading about the amazing work people have been doing across the region.

Yorkshire Club of the Year - Tri Bramley Baths

Nominations for this category included; TriBB, Wakfield Tri Club, LBT, Real Fitness Race Team, Wakefield Junior Tri Club, Swans Tri Club, Craven Energy and Humber Triathletes.

"It's based in the heart of a community and open to all abilities and it's free to join. Tri Bramley Baths has this year hosted an indoor GO TRI Event, a outdoor GO TRI Event and Junior Tri activities.  It has also started a well attended Junior Tri club with children ranging from 9 through to early teens. The GO TRI events have garnered us new members, all of whom have gone onto complete or enter more formal events successfully. Claire Higgins one of our members is a GO TRI ambassador and leader of the Junior Tri section of the club."

Children's Coach of the Year - Louise Hanley

Nominations for this category included; Louise Hanley, Ben Storey, Mark Walby, Paddy Craig, Claire Byrne, Sarah Weston and Carol Young.

"Louise not only runs the junior section of Leeds and Bradford Tri Club, a role she’s held for over 10 years, but also works with the Regional Academy and lastly created and runs the Yorkshire Talent Squad which takes athletes age 13-17 from both a triathlon and a swimming (single sport) background to broaden the talent pool. A bi-product of this squad has been a significant influx of girls in the TriStar 3/Youth age group where typically we see a drop in girls participating in the sport. Her boundless positivity and organisational ability, combined with her technical coaching skills and inclusive approach to coaching, has made a great success of both these groups of athletes. LBT juniors has a waiting list of over a year to join currently, with around 150 juniors currently registered. The club to region relationship and pathway continues to prove a success with current members of the English Talent Squad having been coached by Louise at several points through their journey."

Children's Event of the Year - Wakefield Junior Triathlon

Nominations for this category included; Wakefield Junior Triathlon, The Brownlee Foundation Events, Ripon Junior Triathlon, LBT Aquathlon.

"The organisers were all welcoming, supportive and helpful.  It is clear that they put a lot into the organisation to ensure the event ran well and was a great experience for all.  We saw multiple people working hard for hours before the event to battle against some bad weather which had impacted the course and they managed to make adjustments to ensure safety and positive experiences for all.  Overall, a very well organised event and one that we will attend in future from out of region."

Club Event of the Year - Hathersage Hilly Triathlon organised by Sheffield Tri Club

Nominations for this category included; Hathersage Hilly Triathlon, Ilkley Triathlon, Ripon Triathlon and Wakefield Junior Triathlon.

"This was my first ever triathlon. All the marshalls were really helpful and encouraging. The race was really well organised and clearly set out so I could focus on finishing the event."

"Environment was perfect for spectators, plenty of space meant my family were able to be there at the finish line."

Participation Coach of the Year - Craig Lane

Nominations for this category included; Craig Lane, Micheal Barnett and Sarah Weston.

"Craig is a role model for all the athletes, and also the coaches. Craig has educated himself to a very high level and he shares his knowledge and experience with everybody in fun and innovative training sessions and regular meetings."

"On a weekly basis craig goes above and beyond in not only coaching athletes, he also oversees the club, the other coaches, and does this whilst working full time and still competing at a very high level."

Technical Official of the Year - Gaenor Coy

"Gaenor has put a ot of time and effort into supporting the regional TO's and the Regional Technical Coordinator.  Her advice is invaluable to help improve events and educate participants and organsiers to make the event experice safe and fun."

Commercial Event of the Year - Triology Events Mid Week Super Sprint Series

There was another nomination for this category but they didn't include the name of the event.

"My favourite event, I go back every year because this event really captures the spirit of triathlon. It’s inclusive, welcomes beginners, is safe, is professional and is fun. These events have given hundreds of people the chance to start their tri career."

GO TRI Organiser of the Year - Fiona Hoare

"Fiona has taken the lead/arranged and/or coached numerous GO TRI Events across Yorkshire over the last year. Her positive and supportive approach has been often acknowledged by participants and administrators alike. She has encouraged many who have done the open water swimming sessions, or the learn to swim sessions, or the more general GO TRI Events to take their participation forward, and to achieve more than they ever thought they could do. The smiles on the faces of many of the participants is a testament to her effectiveness."

Volunteer of the Year - Carl Akeroyd

Nominations for this category included; Carl Akeroyd, Mark Summerson and Tim Pattle.

"It is just the quiet unfussy way that Carl goes about his job. No fuss, no commotion - just delivering. He is the sort of person a Club needs."

"Carl has recently joined the Committee at Leeds Bradford Tri Club. prior to that he was already active, but has taken that to a whole new level this year. He has coordinated and arranged our GO TRI activities over the last 2 years - leading on all this activity for the Club. He has also acted as Open Water Swim lead for the committee and has taken on willingly much of the legwork involved in this - from arranging for canoe repairs, to being the first at each session to open up, briefing swimmers and coordinating other volunteers. He has also volunteered at nearly every other event we have run.. all this whilst holding down a very responsible job."

Young Volunteer of the Year - Joshua Weston

" Joshua is infectiously passionate about the sport of triathlon. He is extremely knowledgeable and loves to share this with everyone in the club. While he models himself on other athletes he also inspires with his ‘triathlon progress’ on Instagram and his leadership of our juniors at the Yorkshire Warrior event."

"Joshua attended the Young Triathlon Activator course in October and has set up club championships within our new club, collating results and doing all the calculations. He’s also encouraged club members to get teams together to sign up for a team relay event this month which we wouldn’t have done without him."
