Wakefield Junior Triathlon Club hosted the 2nd race in the Yorkshire Junior Race Series 2018 with their now firmly established Duathlon held at Thornes Park, Wakefield.
In the build up to the event, in the face of a forecast 10 hours of rain before and during the race, the usual pre-race anxiety was amplified as parents and coaches were asked variants of the question: “road bike? mountain bike? cross bike? Nobbly Tyres? I’m going to be freezing!!”
On the day, the weather gods shone on Yorkshire once again and the race was bathed in sunshine. The Wakefield Duathlon features a flat grass run, followed by a testing and hilly cyclo-cross style course through woods, trail and pavement. With multiple laps it creates a great viewing spectacle as the junior athletes fly by.
The second run is back on the field again, as the heat and the hills on the bike started to take their toll.
A good sized field of just under 200 athletes aged between 8 & 16 it showed that we have a lot of grit in Yorkshire as every last one of the 200 athletes fought on with a smile (or possibly a grimace).
The lastest standings can be found here.
The next race is the LBT Aquathlon in Leeds on May 20th. As last year’s Children’s Event of the Year it hopes to deliver another great day. Let’s hope they get the same weather as Wakefield!
