Published:

Each Year Triathlon England, Welsh Triathlon and Triathlon Scotland celebrate coaches across the triathlon community in their annual awards. As part of UK Coaching week, and to say #ThankYouCoach, we’re shining a light on recent winners.

Triathlon England – Liz Scott

Liz Scott was named Triathlon England Coach of the Year in 2024. Liz has dedicated hundreds, if not thousands, of hours to support triathletes and paratriathltes enjoy and improve in the sport. She has mainly worked with junior athletes, with many progressing through her club into the advanced squad. For those that haven’t made that step up, she is still as committed to their involvement in the sport, ensuring everyone finishes training with a smile on their face.

At that difficult age for triathletes when many leave the sport to focus on their studies, Liz’s inclusive nature and passion for the sport has led to many triathletes returning to the sport and club.

On a performance level, Liz has supported athletes from Tri-Stars right through to both the Paralympic and Olympic Performance Pathways to improve and achieve their goals in British Triathlon’s Super Series and beyond.

She is also active in her local regional committee and organises the South East Region’s Junior Race Series.

Triathlon Scotland – Dom James

Dom James was named Triathlon Scotland Coach of the Year back in December. Dom has been Head Coach of Glasgow University Triathlon Club for six years and during that time has helped transform the club, opening the sport up to triathletes of all abilities and creating a more inclusive and welcoming environment.

During his time with the club, both participation and performance at competitions has improved with the club now competing at BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) events. Previously the club had never entered these events and now have large numbers of triathletes attending – a testament to Dom’s ability to encourage and develop people’s confidence and ability as well as his passion to help the sport grow through wider participation, with many of the club’s members completing a triathlon for the first time.

A friendly face in Glasgow’s triathlon community, Dom also coaches at Fusion Triathlon Club and volunteers as a coach for the Triathlon Scotland Academy, showcasing his ability to work triathletes of all abilities.

Welsh Triathlon – Richard Barry

Richard Barry was named Welsh Triathlon Coach of the Year in 2024. Richard is a coach at Newport Under 18s Triathlon Club, supporting triathletes aged between 8 and 18 years old to enjoy swim, bike and run. His dedication to those at the club is incredible and he works hard to ensure every member of the club receives the support they need regardless of ability or their aims in the sport. A welcoming face at the club he helps its members to develop their confidence as well as their triathlon ability, helping create a community feel at the club. His tailored approach that includes athlete specific feedback really does mean there is something for everyone at the club.
