COME AND WATCH TRI LIVERPOOL, HOST OF THE BRITISH TRIATHLON CHAMPIONSHIPS THIS SUNDAY

Published:

Thousands of triathletes, including some of the world’s best, will be taking part in Tri Liverpool this Sunday. The event, which is organised by Lagadere Unlimited Events and British Triathlon in partnership with Liverpool City Council, will start from 7am, with competitors taking part right through the day.

The female and male elite races will start at 3pm and 5pm respectively and, with some stellar names in the line-up, thrilling racing is guaranteed.  Organisers are calling on the people of Liverpool to come out and support competitors, many of whom will be taking part in their first ever triathlon.

Based at the Echo Arena, competitors will swim in the Queens and Wapping Docks, cycle past the Liver Buildings and run across the waterfront before crossing the finish line outside the Echo Arena to collect their hard-earned medal. Unlike many running and cycling events, triathlon is an extremely spectator friendly sport as you get to see the same athlete many times throughout the course of their race.

In the female elite race at 3pm, world no1 female triathlete Gwen Jorgensen will be taking on a strong field in what is certain to be a hugely competitive race. With a raft of talent also in the men’s race, including last year’s winner Brendan Sexton and current ETU U23 Triathlon European Champion Gordon Benson,  spectators are guaranteed a day of high octane triathlon action. The event is also the finale of the British Triathlon Super Series.

Gwen, who is currently the world’s top ranked female triathlete, has expressed her excitement at competing at Tri Liverpool this year, stating: “I’ve heard that it’s a beautiful city and that the event has a really fast and exciting course. It comes at a great time in my training cycle and I’m really looking forward to racing hard and taking the momentum into the ITU World Triathlon Series race in Edmonton later on in August.”

Assistant Mayor, Councillor Wendy Simon, said: “Following months of careful planning, we’re delighted that Tri Liverpool is finally here. We are sure the people of Liverpool will be out in force to show competitors their support and watch the elite races later on in the afternoon. It’s going to be a fantastic day and we hope the next generation will be inspired by the feats of all the amazing sportsmen and women taking part.”

This year’s event will also be streamed live via www.britishtriathlon.org from 7am until 6.30pm. Live results will also be available for the duration of the event on British Triathlon’s website.
