Published:

The Great Britain Team was in action at the Zittau ITU Cross Triathlon World Championships this past weekend, with five medals won by the GB Age-Group Team and a top ten finish for Jacqui Slack in the elite women’s race.

In the age-group races, Peter Norman (75-79) delivered the Great Britain Age-Group Team’s only gold medal of the championship with Louise Hanley (40-44) winning silver. There were three bronze medallist in the team with Russell Hall (35-39), Paul Cooper (40-44) and Simon Osborne (50-54) all claiming the third spot on the podium.

In the elite races, Jacqui Slack had the standout performance finishing sixth with the win going to Katrin Muller of Germany, who added the world title to her European title won earlier in the season.

Flora Duffy (BER) had to settle for second after a very solid performance with Helena Erbenova (CZE) claiming bronze.

Jacqui commented on the race: "It was a grueling day out there on the 2014 ITU Cross World Championships course, more so a battle with the conditions rather than each other.  The standard of women’s cross triathlon has gone from strength to strength with over 30 women from 18 countries lining up on the start line. I’m very proud to represent my country and race the best in the world on a good honest world-class course.

“Congratulations to Katrin Muller the day belayed to her as she executed a perfect race, she was just sensational.”

Jacqui continued: “I’m very excited to be racing these ladies again in October at the XTERRA World Championship in Maui where the field of female athletes raised once again with the returning World Champion, Nicky Samuels.

“I feel that Cross Triathlon is ready to boom and I'm excited to be in the mix and see the sport grow.  Zittua has set the standard in world-class cross triathlon and I'm delighted to be a part of this, huge congratulations to Benno and his team of volunteers who worked tirelessly to run this fantastic event, you've put Zittau on the map."

In the elite men’s race, Rory Downie finished 19th, Llewellyn Holmes was 31st and Asa Shaw did not finish.
