Golden start to Edmonton for GB

Published:

The Great Britain Team has celebrated its first gold medals of the TransCanada Corp. World Triathlon Grand Final Edmonton last night with golden performances in the ITU Aquathlon World Championships.

The first Brit across the line was elite paratriathlete Melissa Reid PT5 who retained her para-aquathlon world title won in 2013, finishing ahead of Spanish rival Susana Rodriguez in a time of 34.57.

Melissa will now continue her preparations for the ITU Paratriathlon World Championships, which take place on Saturday.

The golden performances didn’t stop there, as the Great Britain Age-Group Team which had a team just shy of 70 strong, celebrated a further two gold medals for Barbara Holmes (55-59) and Barbara Walton (65-69).

The team also won four silver medals with Vicky Tester (30-34), Janette Cardy (40-44), Jane Leslie (65-69) and last year’s gold medal winner, Peggy Crome (70-74) all celebrating. Jane’s medal will put her in high spirits ahead of the sprint and standard distance races, as she is one of five Great British athletes who plan to compete in all the age-group races at the Championships.

Michael Birchmore (20-24) and Beverley Childs (55-59) both celebrated bronze medals for the Great Britain Age-Group Team.

The final British medallist from the ITU Aquathlon World Championships was Hannah Kitchen who also won a bronze medal in the elite aquathlon, behind Anneke Jenkins (NZL) and Yuliya Yelistratova (UKR).
