Triathlon England North West Regional Academy Blog June 2016

North West Academy youngsters proving to be a real success...

I have the great privilege of being the Triathlon England Regional Academy Coach for the North West and we have 13 highly talented individuals in the Youth and Junior Elite categories.

I thought I would write this now as we have been having a great deal of success in recent weeks and this season overall.  Last weekend in Leeds our boys Matt Willis, Dan Slater and Marcus Dey took the entire podium in the Elite Youth Aquathlon racing against 70+ athletes from all over GB.  On that occasion Olivia Green ran into 8th position in her race.

Last weekend I drove up to Hetton Lyons in Sunderland for the GB European Youth Championships qualifying Triathlon  – guess what – they did it again this time Dan won with Matt second and Marcus a very strong third.  On this occasion Olivia took the Bronze medal.

Results are here:

The distances were 500m/10.6km/2.5km approximately.

This level of performance from an individual region is previously unknown and all four will be travelling to Hungary with me on 28th June.  The NW Academy should have 4 of the 8 members of the GB Elite teams of 4 girls and 4 boys.  Below is a link to the event which takes the exciting format of Heats on day one, Finals on day 2 and Mixed Relays on day 3. (Never mind the Euro vote – I’m thinking of declaring the North West an independent country for triathlon purposes!)

The Endurance Store very kindly provided a free bike fit for Dan Slater recently and Running Lab tests for Dan, Matt and Marcus.  Marc Laithwaite is a constant source of triathlon knowledge for me and kindly helped to sort a swim session problem in Liverpool for Dan recently as well.

Emma Brunning has been working with the boys recently and both Matt and Dan have seen big increases in their swim performances as a result.

There is a wealth of talent in the ranks of the Academy and the future is very bright for many of the others as well.

Our current sponsors are: EFS – the freight company who sponsor our kit, The Endurance Store, Emma Brunning from Active Blu and of course the TENW Regional Committee.
