Triathlon to feature at Baku European Games

Published:

The British Olympic Association (BOA) today announced the 14 sports chasing qualification to represent Team GB in next year’s inaugural European Games in Baku, Azerbaijan. Triathlon is one of the sports included and the event will offer Olympic ranking points.

Baku 2015, which will be held from June 12-28 next year, will host over 6,000 athletes competing across 20 sports during the 17 days of competition.

Qualification for Baku runs through until the spring of next year Team GB has already secured 92 quota places from 11 disciplines including Boxing, Gymnastics and Triathlon.

Seven disciplines, including triathlon, will have an added significance on the Road to Rio 2016 with each offering Olympic ranking points, qualification standards or automatic qualification for a certain number of athletes.

Baku 2015 also provides the chance for the more junior members of Team GB to gain valuable multi-sport Games experience as well as the prospect of competing against some of Europe’s elite.

Mark England, Chef de Mission for Baku 2015 said:

We’ve qualified in excess of 90 athletes so far for the Games, so we’re confident that with 6 months to go our final athlete numbers could well be over 150, a terrific achievement for an inaugural Games.

“Importantly seven of the disciplines on the competition programme are qualification events for Rio 2016, so it is a crucial part of the journey to those Olympic Games.  The Games are also a fantastic opportunity for young athletes in the Junior events vying to be part of Team GB in future Olympics to experience a multisport event of this scale, alongside 6,000 other athletes.

“I am also looking forward to working with some new sports including Karate who we welcome to Team GB for the first time; it’s a terrific moment for their athletes, coaches and everyone involved in the Karate movement in the UK.”

Note: The triathlon events in Baku take place 13-14 June. The European Games are set to take place every four years and, as such, the ETU Triathlon European Championships will continue in their current annual format - the 2015 Championships take place in Geneva, 9-12 July.
