University of Nottingham Triathlon

Nottingham is one of the leading academic universities in the country and also one of the top sporting Universities finishing 2nd in the overall BUCS league for 2018 / 2019 and being The Times and The Sunday Times 2019 Sports University of the Year. We are a campus university with the added benefit of being near a vibrant city centre and also very close to some amazing countryside. There are 2 Triathlon Squads, Performance and Development with a low number of athlete to coach ratio to ensure quality input and a very busy and social University Triathlon Club.

Facilities and Training Environment

We have an 8 lane 25m indoor pool on campus as well as a state of the art Sports Village with a High Performance Zone including bespoke training area, indoor sprint track and specialist strength and conditioning services. The facility also has a Sports Injury Clinic which offers specialist physiotherapy, sports massage services and a hydrotherapy pool. Nearby we also have access to Harvey Hadden Sports Complex which has an 8 lane 50m pool, 8 lane running track and a closed road cycle circuit. Riding wise, apart from the cycle track, there are plenty of quiet roads and easy access to the Peak District for longer more challenging rides. There is lots of good on or off road running either on campus or in the surrounding area, such as Wollaton Park or along the River Trent. During the summer we have access to open water facilities at the Holme Pierrepont Water Sports Centre and Colwick Country Park.

Squad Standards and Eligibility

There are trials each year in October for both squads over a 400m swim and 5km run. The following times serve as a guideline for entry along with race results (where cycling and triathlon racing ability/skills are assessed). We also make sure we look at athletes as individuals and what they can bring to the squad long term so the standards are only a small part of our selection criteria.

Athletic Union Club

Alongside the performance section of the club we have a busy general squad with around 100 members. General squad athletes have access to 5 coached sessions per week (3 swims/1 run/1 bike) and additional group sessions such as yoga, circuits and wattbike sessions which run alongside many of the performance sessions. Athletes range from recreational to world age group, BUCS and domestic Super Series level.

Scholarships and Support

The University has a range of sports scholarships which are aimed at providing an unrivalled level of support to the brightest and best talents in the sporting world. As well as a reputation for academic excellence, we have a history of sporting success and are passionate about supporting promising athletes during their time at Nottingham. There are four levels of scholarships offered ranging from gym membership, S&C and physiotherapy support through to monetary scholarships of up to £8k. The University is also a TASS recognised centre.

Finding Out More

The university has open days throughout the year where a member of the triathlon programme is available to speak to. We also actively encourage prospective athletes to come and train with us for a bit to meet some of our athletes and try out our training programme/facilities, and also to find out about the University and the City. More information on the squads and contact details can be found through the University of Nottingham coach Steve Lloyd. Please visit the University websites for more information on each institution.
