Lauren Steadman caused an upset at the London ITU World Paratriathlon Event to win one of Britain’s four gold medals in Hyde Park. Steadman upset teammate and ITU world champion, Faye McClelland, who hadn’t been beaten in over three years.

Chris Goodwin, Melissa Reid and Jane Egan were the other gold medal winners as the Great Britain Paratriathlon Team won eleven medals in total.

Steadman was surprised and delighted to win PT4 gold, commenting: “I’m feeling pretty happy at the moment. If you would have told me I’d beat a four times world champion today I wouldn’t have believed it.”

Complimenting her team and room-mate, Lauren added: “She is tough, she is hard to beat. The whole way round I was petrified that she was going to catch me. I like racing her though, she is a top racer.”

McClelland welcomed the close rivalry in this category, commenting: “I’m gutted obviously. I went out there, I did my best but it wasn’t enough today. It’s good to have competition, it’s going to push me more.”

ITU world champion Chris Goodwin won gold in the PT5 category for visually impaired athletes. He was guided by Ben Matthews to finish ahead of David Ellis, also a world champion but now the visually impaired and blind categories have been combined they were racing for just one gold medal today.

Having won the world title here last September, Goodwin said: “It’s great to be racing in Hyde Park again, it feels like home, and perfect conditions today.”

Ellis said: “Being here has brought back great memories. I feel part of something, GB are probably the best nation in triathlon with the best people in world helping us perform at our best.”

Melissa Reid echoed those sentiments after winning PT5 gold with Melissa King guiding her. She said: “It’s amazing to win in Hyde Park. The British set-up is brilliant wherever we have gone. I don’t think it matters where we are, the ultimate goal is always the same [to win].”

Jane Egan, a three-time world champion from Glasgow won the fourth gold medal for Great Britain in the PT1 category, and will have her eyes on the European Championships next month where double points are available for Series rankings.
