Stockholm hosts penultimate World Triathlon Series round

Published:

The penultimate round of the ITU World Triathlon Series takes place on Saturday in Stockholm. Commonwealth champions Alistair Brownlee and Jodie Stimpson will take on strong fields in Stockholm. They’re joined by seven other British triathletes who are taking the last opportunity to score Series points before the World Triathlon Grand Final in Edmonton next week.

Brownlee may have missed too many of the early rounds to challenge for the 2014 world title, but he is keen to finish the year on a high having performed brilliantly at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

He said: “The cobbles, tight corners and short, sharp inclines on the bike course in Stockholm make it a challenging course. I really enjoyed the race there last year and the strong field this year is going to make it interesting I’m sure.”

He added: “The Commonwealth Games was my main objective for the season and winning two gold medals was fantastic. I want to finish the season on a high now.”

Younger brother Jonathan Brownlee is currently second in the Series behind Javier Gomez (ESP). He has the opportunity to close the gap by improving on one of the fifth place finishes he recorded at the start of the season. With extra points on offer at the Grand Final, Jonathan Brownlee is one of a few athletes in contention for the world title if Gomez falters.

Aaron Harris could move up into the world's top ten in Stockholm. He’s only completed four rounds so far so all points won in Stockholm will be added to his current tally. Having finished sixth at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games the 26 year-old is clearly in the form of his life.

Also competing in the men’s race are Tom Bishop and David McNamee.

In the absence of Gwen Jorgensen (USA), Jodie Stimpson is the highest ranked female athlete in Stockholm this weekend. The Commonwealth champion is in an excellent position to close the gap on Jorgensen, but the American remains in a very strong position to win the 2014 world title.

She said: “The Commonwealths Games was everything I dreamed it would be. It’s given me a lot of confidence going into the last two races of the year.”

Commonwealth bronze medallist, Vicky Holland, has withdrawn from Stockholm to rest a foot injury ahead of the Grand Final, but fellow Glasgow 2014 team mate, Lucy Hall, will be there along with Lois Rosindale and Natalie Milne.

The events in Stockholm take place at 12:46 (men) and 14:51 (women) on Saturday. Stockholm is one hour ahead of the UK, so BBC coverage will be available live at 11.40 and 13:45 via the Red Button. Highlights will be shown on BBC2 at 5.30pm.

Immediately following Saturday’s race, athletes will travel to Edmonton to prepare for the TransCanada Corp. World Triathlon Grand Final Edmonton. As well as the elite men’s and women’s world titles being decided there, the world's best paratriathletes and amateur athletes will compete for world titles in various categories.
