British Triathlon Performance Assessments & Paraduathlon Championships

Published:

The opening round of the British Triathlon Super Series took place at Nottingham and Prestwold in early-April. Athletes competed across youth, junior and senior categories in the Performance Assessments, used to determine qualification for the remainder of the series. The racing took place over two days, with a swim time trial over 400m (youths) or 800m (juniors and seniors) on the Saturday, followed by a bike-run pursuit start on the Sunday. These races were followed in the schedule by the British Paraduathlon Championships over the super-sprint distance. There was a strong Welsh and Performance Centre (NTPCW) contingent competing across all categories.

The youths and juniors kicked off the day, with a record number of Welsh athletes competing for their slots. Ifan Bowen was the standout performer in the youth category, finishing 9th overall, with 8 other Welsh athletes finishing in the top-40 of their respective categories. On the junior side, Liam Edwards put together his best ever performance, finishing 3rd and earning qualification to the Junior European Cup event in Caorle, Italy next month. He was closely followed home by Deri Mccluskey in 9th and Morgan Watts in 17th, with all three showing some excellent progress over their winter training.

In the senior events, Jas Cooper was the only female representative from NTPCW, finishing 10th overall (4th senior) with one of the fastest run splits of the day. In the open race, the NTPCW boys packed closely at the finish, with Matt Shipley (who set a swim meet record of 8:21 on day 1), Hugo Jinks, Malachi Cashmore (who posted the fastest bike split of the day), Guy Evans-Haggerty and Harry Butterworth all finishing between 13th and 18th overall. Danny Jones had a solid swim on the first day, but pulled out on the run as part of a plan to manage an existing injury.

The final event of the day was the British Paraduathlon Championships. Former Paralympic swimmer Rhiannon Henry, making her comeback to triathlon after having a daughter last year, was the winner in the PTVI female category, and Darren Williams was also on the podium in the PTWC open category, earning a silver medal. Megan Fergusson, who will join NTPCW as she is Cardiff Met bound in September, competed in her first multisport event, and took bronze in the PTS5 female category.

Next stop for the British Triathlon Super Series is our home event in Llanelli on Saturday 13th May, followed as ever by the first round of the Welsh Triathlon Super Series on Sunday 14th. It is always an incredible weekend of action across every element of the sport, so be sure to head down and join in!
