Cardiff Junior Triathlon & Inter-Regional Championships Selection

Published:

The fifth round of the Welsh Triathlon TriStar Series (TSS) took place at Maindy Leisure Centre, Cardiff on Saturday 10th June, organised by Cardiff Junior Triathlon Club. Almost 200 athletes aged 8-18 years old raced across varying distances in triathlon and aquathlon. This event also held the selection races for the Inter-Regional Championships (IRC’s) due to take place in September at Mallory Park. The IRC’s brings together the best athletes from each of the ten English regions, Scotland and Wales. In the case of Wales, the team will represent Wales as a whole.

Despite the forecast suggesting heavy rain and thunderstorms, the weather held out for a day filled mostly with sunshine! The event included a pool swim followed by both the cycling and running sections of the races being held on the outdoor velodrome, offering a safe and spectator-friendly course.

The event saw a mix of seasoned TriStar athletes as well as several novices completing their first ever multi-sport event. There were some closely fought battles across all the races, including a few exciting sprint finishes!

The success of the event would not have been possible without the many volunteers who gave their time and energy to make it happen. A special thank you to the race organiser, Rob James, and all the Cardiff Junior Triathlon Club volunteers. Also, a big thank you to the volunteer Technical Officials (TO); Nigel Townsend, John Brown and Deborah Longman for their expertise in ensuring a fair and safe race for all.

Congratulations to the 18 athletes who were selected for the Welsh IRC team- we can’t wait to see you race again at the IRC’s in September!

As an additional note, Welsh Triathlon would like to remind athletes and parents that it is their responsibility to ensure they are following all the rules of the race and behaving in an appropriate way in line with the British Triathlon Code of Ethics. The Code of Ethics defines how we expect everyone in triathlon to conduct themselves whenever they are involved with swim, bike and run. In doing so we will build a welcoming, safe and inclusive environment for everyone in our sport to enjoy.
