The next round of the British Triathlon Super Series took place at Roker Beach, Sunderland over the weekend of 29th July.
Youth athletes were racing over a super-sprint distance with the juniors and seniors racing a ¾ distance of a 1k swim, 30km bike and 7.5km run. This would also serve as the U23 World Championships qualifier race.
There was a strong Welsh and Performance Centre (NTPCW) contingent competing across all categories.
In the Youth A Female category, Josie Hurst was the first Welsh athlete home, finishing in 18th position. Closely followed by Lucy Jones, who finished in 20th position after having a standout swim to lead the race out of the water. Ciara Cust and Hollie Lewis both also had great performances finishing in the top 30.
Welsh athletes put together some very strong performances in the Youth Open races, all finishing within the top 10 of their categories with some of their best performances yet. Ifan Bowen was first home in 5th Youth B, followed by Iwan Froley 6th Youth A, Finley Bruce 7th Youth A and Rowan Townsend 7th Youth B. After a tricky T1, Morgan Willis unfortunately withdrew during the bike. In the Junior Open race Deri McCluskey had a great race finishing 3rd with Morgan Watts following in 13th.
The first of the two senior races was the open race with 6 athletes representing NTPCW. Dom Coy was the first of the group to finish (10th overall) after an impressive bike to run display. Next across the line was Ollie Turner (12th overall). Turner was followed by Harry Butterworth and Robbie Gibson (15th & 25th respectively). Genta Uchida rounded off the NTPCW athletes, making his Super Series debut. Hugo Jinks also started the race but was forced to withdraw following a crash early on the bike.
In the women's race, Tilly Anema continues an already successful season, finishing 2nd overall. This has secured Anema with a spot in September’s U23 World Championships in Pontevedra. Ellie White produced another impressive result to finish 5th overall. Jas Cooper raced well to finish 12th Senior.
