Welsh Triathlon has been looking to get clubs, leisure centres and schools to host GO TRI events, with the aim of increasing participation and providing wider awareness about triathlon and its various multi-discipline variations. Torfaen Triathlon Club are one of the first clubs to run GO TRI events in Wales, we asked their club secretary to share a few words on their experience as an event organiser.
“Welsh Triathlon suggested a GO TRI event would be ideal for a new club such as ours, as it is meant to be a low-key entry level event that involves minimum work to host.”
Welsh Triathlon provides event organisers with the all the support they would need in organising a GO TRI event. This includes, advice on risk assessments, route planning and event logistics, as well as providing the basic equipment that you would need for an event of this nature to take place. “We were provided with a pack containing all the relevant information, and within 6 months of forming the club, we were hosting our first GO TRI. Welsh Triathlon supplied marshal bibs, signs, and swim hats.”
To manage a GO TRI event, we recommend that an event organiser uses the Event Organisers System. This allows an event organiser to register their event with British Triathlon in order to get a permit. The system also provides a simple way of managing entries, and will also generate a start list for you. “Entries are handled by British Triathlon GO TRI site – who also gave advice regarding the risk assessments and other paperwork.”
“Despite atrocious weather for the run, our first event was a stunning success. We have since held another 2 events, each one well received by participants, and above all, without putting any undue stress or strain on club members involved in the hosting.”
Torfaen Triathlon Club would advise any triathlon club considering putting on an event – GO TRI one!
