The Affiliate squad is for athletes aged 15-19 years old (youth and juniors) as of 31st December of the relevant race season. The purpose is to provide athletes with training day and mentor support to expose them to the key elements of performance triathlon with a view to progressing on the Transition/Development Squads.
Do I need triathlon experience to get involved?
Not at all! Whilst it is beneficial to have some prior experience prior to applying for the Affiliate squad, any athlete who meets the selection standards can be selected.
The selection criteria are based around an athlete’s physiological profile across swim, bike and run. It is weighted more towards swim and run ability as at this age and stage development this is considered of higher priority. There is also an element of cycling proficiency that is taken into consideration.
How do I get involved?
Apply to be selected for the Affiliate squad within the selection windows as they are announced. This will be published on the website and Welsh Triathlon’s social media channels. Being an active member of a triathlon club is highly recommended as they help you to develop the key triathlon skills.
Do I have to be selected?
Yes. The selection criteria can be found HERE. We use a profiling tool to select athletes based off their physical abilities. There are two selection windows per year, one in September and one in February. This is to account for the different rates at which athletes develop physically and technically as well as giving multiple opportunities for athletes to be selected.
What is expected of each Squad athlete?
- Work with athlete mentors to identify their own personal development plan
- Beginning to show an understanding and ability to deliver performance behaviours
- Start to take ownership of their training and working with coaches/mentors
- Engagement at sessions and camps
- Commit to racing the British Youth and Junior Super Series alongside single sport activities
- Progression towards Transition/Development squad
