Welland Valley Triathlon Club had a phenomenal turnout and performance at the 'Bedford Team Relays’, which also incorporated Triathlon England’s East Region Team Relay Championships.
Taking fourteen relay teams, WVTri had the strongest club presence at this popular event held at Box End Park, Bedford. Sixteen triathlon clubs from across the region entered 93 teams of 279 triathletes and all battled hard in this coveted competition, with WVTri securing the second quickest time of the day.
As a sprint relay, the race consisted of a 750m open water swim, followed by a fast 18.4km bike ride and finished with a two-loop 5km run around the park on grass. The predicted thunderstorms stayed at bay, and the athletes were faced with rising temperatures by the time they started their run. Teams consisted of three athletes, who all completed each discipline in turn before moving onto the next. A wrist worn timing chip acts as the baton, with designated ’tag’ zones for the speedy and exciting handovers.
