How does nominating for an elite multisport event work?

Athletes must nominate themselves for selection by reading and then completing the online form linked in the selection policies or above in the table.

Once the form is completed the athlete will receive an email to confirm the form has been received. One week after the nomination deadline the athlete will be informed if they have been selected for the team.

What if I have a question about nominating for an event?

If athletes have read the selection policies in full and need further support to nominate themselves please contact  multisport@britishtriathlon.org.

What is the timeline for each event in 2024?

One week after the nomination deadline athletes will be informed by email they have been selected for the team.

Selected athletes will be sent a link to pay the race entry fee. This link will be open for 2 weeks.

British Triathlon will confirm if the athletes' sponsors can be added to their tri-suits. Athletes will be sent a tri-suit to try on if they do not already have one. (No extra team kit will be sent out including tri-suits).

4 weeks out from the event the start lists will be linked above.

One week out from the event athletes will be sent a final team email with final details of the event.

What medical checks do athletes need to complete if they are selected?

World Triathlon require COMPULSORY pre-participation examination (PPE) screening for ALL senior, under 23 and junior elite athletes entered into any World Triathlon races. The main purpose of the screening is to identify athletes at risk of sudden cardiac death due to an electrical or structural heart abnormality.

The forms can be found on the selection policies page of the British Triathlon website under "World Triathlon PPE Screening Requirements."

There are 3 forms, one to explain the screening. The second is a "Doctor Certification ‘Fit to Compete’ Form" which must be completed. The third form is the "World Triathlon Medical Screening Questionnaire."

The fit to compete form and the medical screening questionnaire MUST be sent to eliteentries@britishtriathlon.org and multisport@britishtriathlon.org before an athlete nominated to compete in an event. Both forms are valid for two years. After two years they must be completed again.

What are the Anti-Doping requirements of elite multisport athletes?

British Triathlon pre-nomination requirements

From the 1st January 2024 athletes who are nominated to compete in an Elite Multisport event must complete the Compete Clean Plus anti-doping course available on the UKAD website and send the certificate to multisport@britishtriathlon.org before they complete the nomination form or can not be considered for the team.

Certificates are valid for two years from the date of issue and then must be renewed every two years

World Triathlon requirements

Elite multisport athletes are expected to adhere to the UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) rules as well as completing the UKAD Complete Clean + Anti-Doping course or the International Athletes Anti-Doping Education 2023.

Once the anti-doping course is complete, athletes should create an account in the World Triathlon Education and Knowledge Hub and upload their course certificate by following the instructions HERE. Certificates should also be sent to multisport@britishtriathlon.org.

Failure to upload a certificate from a completed course will mean that athletes cannot participate in their race.

When overseas at an event the WADA anti-doping rules will be enforced by World Triathlon using the destination countries Anti-Doping organisation.

All athletes, whether Olympians, Elite, Age Group or regular UK competitors are expected to compete "clean" and are solely responsible to what enters their bodies. Everyone associated with athletes has a duty of care to ensure they are not breaking the UKAD anti-doping rules. To help athletes and their associates navigate the anti-doping laws, UKAD has a great website to refer to, an app called 100% me which anyone can download and, an education hub where anyone can educate themselves about clean sport. You can also contact British Triathlon with any questions cleansport@britishtriathlon.org

I'm an elite athlete and I take medication, do I need a TUE prior to competing in an elite event?

Yes. All athletes competing at elite level must have a TUE prior to attending their race. Click here for more information.

What kit will be sent out to elite multisport athletes?

For all races except middle and long distance a GBR elite tri-suit will be provided along with a small kit allocation and a GBR elite tri-suit. Athletes who already have received the elite tri-suit and kit allocation will not be sent further kit.

Middle and long distance - Athletes can choose between a GBR elite tri-suit or a Huub triathlon suit specially produced for British Triathlon. If athletes chose the Huub suit their details will be passed to Huub and Huub will liaise with the athlete to produce the tri-suit. There is a fee of £199 which the athlete must pay to Huub. This will only happen once the athlete has paid the race entry fee.

When completing the nomination form athletes will be asked the size of tri-suit and kit they need. Once they have been selected for the team athletes will be sent the kit and tri-suit to try on. Athletes are able to change the size of the tri-suit but must post it back to British Triathlon and are responsible for the cost of postage. It is recommended that only tracked postage is used. Once happy with the size athletes send the tri-suit for printing which is then sent back to them directly.

Athletes are advised to be careful with their GB tri-suit and not use it unnecessarily. If a suit is damaged and not able to be used before a race, we cannot guarantee that we can get another tri suit out to the athlete in time for their race.

Can an athlete add any sponsor to their elite GBR tri-suit?

When an athlete nominates for an event they are asked if they have any sponsors they would like to be added to their GBR tri-suit. If athletes are selected, their logos will be approved by British Triathlon in a prompt manor and the athlete will be informed if their logo is permitted at the time they are notified that they are selected for the team. It is very rare that logos are not permitted but British Triathlon reserves the right to approve all sponsor logos being added to elite GBR tri-suits prior to them being added. We request athletes supply links to their sponsors logo in a PDF or Vector file to allow for printing.

Click here to read the British Triathlon uniform branding guidelines.

How do elite multisport athletes enter the races?

Depending on the type of race the race entry fee is either paid to British Triathlon or directly to the event organiser when the athlete registers for the event.

Details will be confirmed when the athlete has been selected.

Athletes will need to pay their race entry fee by the deadline date. If athlete an does not pay their race entry fee by the deadline date, they will not be added to the start list for the event

What happens with the race entry fees for the elite multisport races?

If an athletes withdraws once the start lists for the race has been produced British Triathlon cannot guarantee that we can issue athletes with a refund because we may still be charged for their race entry fee. British Triathlon will contact the race organisers to request a refund of a withdrawn athletes race entry fee but we cannot guarantee that this request will be successful.

Unfortunately if an athlete has an outstanding debt with British Triathlon they will not be considered until this is cleared.

Please note that when the European Long Distance Triathlon Championships take place at Challenge races there may be a change in the cost of the race entry fee. Please click here for more information.

What funding is available for elite multisport athletes?

There is no funding available for elite multisport athletes. Athletes must pay the race entry fee, all associated travel and accomodation costs themselves.

British Triathlon is supported by our travel partner, Nirvana. Nirvana provide a premium travel service at each event with expertise in triathlon logistics going back 20 years. Elite multisport athletes do not have to book their travel and accommodation through Nirvana.

Click here for Nirvana travel packages.

What prize money is available to elite multisport athletes?

Details of prize money can be found on each event page, linked above. This is normally added as the event approaches.

Prize money is paid directly by World Triathlon to the athletes. If unsure that the email from World Triathlon is genuine when being asked for bank details to receive prize money, please contact multisport@britishtriathlon.org and we will double check on your behalf.

What if I am a parent/guardian to an under 18 athlete who want to be/has been selected?

For parents/guardians of athletes who are under 18 years of age, it is advised that your email address is added to the nomination form so British Triathlon can update you as well as your athlete.

It is advised that parents/guardians travel to the events with athletes who are under 18 years of age.

Which Home Nations membership do I need to compete in the elite team?

Athletes are advised to hold an Ultimate Home Nations membership when competing in events outside the UK. This is because the Core membership has different levels of public liability insurance cover compared to the Ultimate membership and athletes should be aware of the differences.

To nominate for selection, athletes must hold either a Core or Ultimate Home Nations membership but can upgrade to an Ultimate membership once selected. It is the athletes responsibility to ensure both them and their kit is comprehensively insured to race both in the UK and outside the UK.

Click here to find out more about membership packages.

What insurance do I need to compete in the elite team?

Although your British Triathlon membership covers you for liability insurance when racing, it does not cover medical expenses, repatriation, bike insurance or travel insurance. Athletes are advised to ensure they are comprehensively insured when competing in the UK and abroad.

Below is a list of things to consider when competing;

Is your passport up to date and has enough time left on it to ensure you can travel to your event?

Do you have a GHIC card? The UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) lets you get state healthcare in Europe at a reduced cost or sometimes for free.

Do you have comprehensive travel and medical insurance? If you are hospitalised during training or your race will you be able to produce documents to show that you are insured.

Is your bike and kit insured for loss, damage and theft?

Yellow jersey are British Triathlon's insurance partner. Athletes have access to a discount through their membership. Simply log into your British Triathlon membership account, go to your Dashboard, then click on My Benefits, then Discounts, then Yellow Jersey.
