Membership Update from BTF Chair and TE President

Published:

Bill James, Chair of the British Triathlon Federation and Jamie Gordon, President of the Triathlon England Council, have written to you all about the unprecedented times we are currently in.

As the Chair of the British Triathlon Federation and the President of the Triathlon England Council, we wanted to write to you all about the unprecedented times we are currently in.

It’s hard right now to find the correct balance for an email like this but we will do our best. COVID-19 has changed all of our worlds in ways that were unthinkable even a couple of weeks ago and the truth is, we have no idea how long it will carry on for.

At this time of year, we were expecting to be getting incredibly excited about the Olympic and Paralympic Games, guessing who was going to be representing our sport for Team GB and Paralympics GB and enjoying the extra coverage that a Games period brings. Some of us would also normally have been delighted to be starting to race again or at least preparing for our first races of the season, wondering what impact our winter training has had. Others amongst us might have been looking forward to starting our triathlon journey, finding out what the sport consisted of or picking up where we had begun over the winter or at the end of last year.

Instead, we are all worrying about our loved ones, our businesses and working out how to be in this new life of ours. Training and keeping fit are part of that, but the recent weeks have put that very much into context for most of us.

We want to reassure you that although our sport has for the time being, paused, we have not turned the lights off. We are still working behind the scenes to ensure that life goes on and when we are able to emerge from our homes, we will be in a position to carry on delivering the sport that we all love. We will be talking to everyone involved in our sport in the next few weeks and doing everything we can to support you.

A huge part of this is around communication and particularly to you, our members. Our membership team is coming up with content that we hope you will find interesting and useful, that will be delivered through our digital channels over the next few weeks. This will range from exciting partner offers and information, to athlete led activity as well as opening up the world of the performance teams, who work with our Olympic and Paralympic pathway athletes. All of this will arrive in the coming days and weeks and we hope will go some way to supporting you until the season can get going again.

We'll use all of our digital channels including; social media, the website and email - to send you relevant and interesting info. We will take some trips down memory lane, we will share inspirational and uplifting stories that have never been told before and try to answer your questions as we go along. We will be doing some live stuff as well – we will be introducing some kind of Q&A facility (live or otherwise!) as soon as we can get the technology up and running so you can ask questions of us and other key people within our sport.

For those of you who have a coach membership, we will be contacting you directly to ensure we understand the issues you might be facing if you run a coaching business and ensuring that you have appropriate support and information.

We have sent this email to all members as it is announcing the Membership Hub as a new service as part of your membership. If you want to continue to receive regular updates from us about this, please make sure that your email preferences are up to date to enable us to do this. You can change them by visiting your account page

I will be stepping down in the coming days as Chair of Triathlon England to take up my new role as Chair of British Triathlon. An announcement will be made shortly about the appointment of an interim Chair who will take over whilst the Board goes through the process of recruiting a permanent replacement for me. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has contacted me regarding the change in my role – your good wishes are very much appreciated.

We would like to thank you for the huge showing of support that we and the whole of the British Triathlon and Triathlon England team has received recently. We are all working hard to get things back to normal as quickly as possible and look forward, as we are sure that you do, to getting the season underway!

Very Best Wishes.
