2023 World Triathlon Championship Series Sunderland – UKHSA investigation completed

Published:

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has concluded its investigation into the cause of illness experienced by some participants of the UK leg of the World Championship Series in Sunderland in July 2023.

British Triathlon welcomes the findings from UKHSA’s report and has contacted all those who took part in the event to share this with them. The executive summary and full report can be found here or email UKHSA at: nehpu@ukhsa.gov.uk.

We want to thank everyone who was affected for working with the UKSHA to enable them to complete this report. We were sorry that people became unwell after this event and have fully supported the UKHSA throughout their investigation.

As with all World Triathlon Championship Series events, tests were carried out across the event weekend in the event swim area. These tests were in line with World Triathlon Series guidelines for hosting such an event and returned excellent water quality results.

The outbreak itself should not detract from what was a very successful event that attracted triathletes of all abilities to Sunderland.
