Taking to the course of the Accenture World Triathlon Mixed Relay Nottingham, the top age-group talent from Britain battled it out on the draft-legal course to be crowned British Triathlon Sprint Distance Champions.
With British Championship titles and Great Britain Age-Group qualification spots on offer for the age-group winners, over 200 British Triathlon members took to the course for the British Sprint Championships. A unique World Series setting on the bank of the River Trent in Nottingham, offered age group athletes the chance to race on a draft-legal course.
Due to the persistent rainfall over the past week in the Nottingham area, the Accenutre World Triathlon Nottingham races were held as duathlons in a run, bike, run format. The Championship races consisted of a 1.5km (1 lap) run 1, 18.2km (5 laps) bike and 4.5km (3 laps) run two.
The first male finisher to cross the line was Welshman Liam Lloyd (25-29) in a time of 47:05, over 40 seconds clear of second placed man James Hodgson. Liam said: “With it being a duathlon and having two running parts on the course, I had to push from the very start. There was no rest as I was constantly on the power but it was a thoroughly enjoyable race and it was great feeling to take the tape.”
In a sprint finish to the line, Scotland’s Kathryn Kennedy (25-29) was the first female across the line and said: “I used to be a 400m runner so I knew if I could stay with the front group until the last 400m, I could sprint to the end. It was actually a fun race. It was hard but I enjoyed it and all my tactics worked out in the end.”
Nicola Timmins (35-39) was the fastest female finisher of the day, crossing the line in a time of 00:55:05.
Matt Barnes (40-44) came home as the first finisher in the second male wave with Kelly Gordon winning the 40-44 female age-group category. Richard Bewell pipped Greg Lewis to the line to take the male 55-59 crown with Claire Bloom winning the female 55-59 age-group.
