Brocklesby represents triathlon at Sportswoman of the Year Awards

Tonight sees the Sunday Times and Sky Sportswoman of the Year Awards in London. Triathlon is represented by Eddie Brocklesby, who is one of five nominees for the Community Award. The event will be televised at 9.30pm on Sky 1 and Sky Sports 1 and will feature stars including Lizzie Armitstead and Jessica Ennis-Hill.

Brocklesby competes in long distance triathlon, setting a new personal best time at Ironman Vichy this summer at the age of 72. An inspirational athlete, she came late to sport, taking up running when she was 50 and more recently set up a charity, Silverfit, to encourage more over 50s to take part in regular physical activity in and around London.

At 54 her husband died, and an entry to the London Marathon via her running club proved to be the support and motivation she needed. She now passes on her enormous enthusiasm to others via Silverfit. You can read more here.

The Community Award is for individuals who have actively engaged with different groups of people within their community through sport. Others who have been shortlisted include Liverpool Homeless Football Club.

The top-six shortlisted for the Sportswoman of the Year award are: Lizzie Armitstead (road cycling), Rachel Atherton (mountain biking), Charlotte Dujardin (dressage), Jessica Ennis-Hill (athletics), Bianca Walkden (taekwondo) and Lizzy Yarnold (skeleton).

Previous winners include Chrissie Wellington, Denise Lewis, Dame Kelly Holmes, Zara Phillips, and Jessica Ennis-Hill. Charlotte Dujardin, Olympic and world dressage champion, was crowned the 2014 Sportswoman of the Year.

The awards will be televised via Sky 1 and Sky Sports 1 from 9.30pm tonight (Friday 6 November). You can also get involved via Twitter by following #SWOTY and find out more about Silverfit via http://www.silverfit.org.uk.
