First ever Age-Group Mixed Relay Championships round-off British success in Montreal

Published:

Over 200 athletes represented the GB Age-Group Team at the World Triathlon Sprint and Relay Championships in Montreal, where age group athletes competed in the mixed relay at a World Championships for the first time.

The World Mixed Relay Championships is a new addition to the age group calendar for 2022 and, like the elite mixed relay, saw two male and two female athletes complete their own swim, bike, run before then tagging their teammate to start their leg.

History was made in the 60-69 age group as the team of Kelvin Spencer, Linda Russell-Bond, Ian Gilham and Barbara Holmes became the first ever GB Age-Group Team members to be crowned world mixed relay champions.

In the same age group, Great Britain claimed bronze with the medal success also continuing in the 20-29 and 40-49 age groups with silver medals and bronze in the 40-49 age category.

The mixed relay followed the World Triathlon Sprint Championships which were held on Saturday morning and ended with nine gold, three silver and four bronze medals for the GB Age-Group Team.

Two members of the gold-medal winning mixed relay team had already become world champions over the sprint distance with victories for Barbara Holmes (F60-64) and Linda Russell-Bond (F65-69) in their age groups.

There were 67 years separating the youngest and oldest gold medallists for Great Britain with Lucy Hoseason winning on her championships debut in the 16-19 age group, while Judith Mackay claimed the honours in the 85-89 age group.

Michael Smallwood took his tally of World and European Championships gold medals to 18 with his latest coming in the 75-79 age group over the sprint distance. James Hodgson repeated his gold medal success from 2019 by becoming world champion again in the 25-29 age category.

Rebecca Goodwin (F35-39), James Garner (M40-44) and Linda Ashmore (F75-79) all became world champion for the first time.
