GE Canary Wharf Triathlon offers a taste of world-class racing on the streets of London

Published:

A selection of the world’s best elite triathletes will take on a Super-Sprint eliminator in what promises to be a high-octane spectacle around the iconic Canary Wharf, London’s premier business and shopping district, on Thursday June 28 2012.

Elite competitors at the GE Canary Wharf Triathlon, the third event of the 2012 British Triathlon Super Series, will race twice in one night with a 400m swim, 10km bike ride and a 2km run.  Heats begin during the early rush hour, with the finals finishing under floodlights.

Commenting on the Super-Sprint format, Britain’s Aaron Harris, who placed second in the 2011 GE Canary Wharf Triathlon, said: “I would love to come back and race it all over again, I enjoyed the heat and the final, it’s just like track racing, it’s brilliant.”

The Corporate Challenge, now exclusively open to employees of Canary Wharf based companies, offers the chance to experience the thrill of racing on the same course as elite athletes, just five weeks before Hyde Park hosts the triathlon competition for the London 2012 Olympic Games on Saturday 4 and Tuesday 7 August.

Expect some fast-paced action as the teams of three go up against each other starting with a 400m swim, followed by 10km on the bike and finishing off with a 2km run. The multi-lap course offers fantastic spectator viewing throughout the swim, run and bike sections. Entry Information is available online at www.canarywharftriathlon.com.

British terrestrial broadcaster Channel 4 has confirmed it will screen highlights of the race in two half hour specials, which will be available in high definition for the first time this year. Highlights for the women’s race will air on July 14 and on July 21 for the men’s race.

Volunteer recruitment is open for anyone with a passion for sport and who wants to be part of one of the most iconic triathlon events in the UK. For additional information about volunteering opportunities visit www.canarywharftriathlon.com.

British Triathlon, Chief Executive Zara Hyde Peters OBE, said: “With the Olympic triathlon coming up on August 4th and 7th, this is the last chance to catch world-class triathletes as they go all out for the win. The GE Canary Wharf Triathlon provides an exciting spectacle for athletes and spectators alike, with tenants of Canary Wharf also having the chance to take part in our fast growing, modern and dynamic sport through the Corporate Challenge. It’s an exciting time for the sport of triathlon, and with three British Triathlon Super Series races taking place before the Olympic Triathlon events, this event will provide the perfect taster to inspire the British sporting public to come to Hyde Park and support our athletes as they race for Team GB.”

Sian Astrop, Arts & Events Manager at Canary Wharf Group said: "After last year's enthralling event, we are thrilled to host the GE Canary Wharf Triathlon again in 2012. The event strengthens Canary Wharf's reputation as an arena for elite sport With many of Canary Wharf's bars and restaurants offering prime viewing positions to cheer on and bring the best out of the professional athletes.

"This will be Canary Wharf's last sporting competition before the world focuses on the East End as it hosts the greatest sporting event in the world, the London 2012 Games."
